1997 pontiac won't stay on

My 1997 pontiac grand am turns off immediatly after starting all lights come on including the anti theft light i have already changed the fuel filter and problem still pursist. i continued cranking it over and eventually it stayed on however it turned on and off for a few days, i am afraid the problem will pursist again. Having the same probs. Will start then shut off.Start , shut off. When it finally does stay on , all idiot lights flash on and the guages go dead ( except for the speedometer and the gas guage). Then all goes back to normal with the lights off, and the guages work. Flash on, flash off.Mechanic has spent hours trying to figure this out and I cannot afford for him to continue without a valid and viable solution.
Can someone help asap? T.T.

When I try to start my 1997 Grand Am, the same thing happens. My anti-theft light continually blinks. I have to wait for it to stop blinking before I canstart my car. This can take up to fifteen minutes. If I try to start it while it's blinking, I have to wait longer. My mechanic can't figure it out. Does anyone know the answer?

I had the same prob. w my 97 grand am. i bought a new ignition switch and installed it...after installing you have to reset the theft system. all you have to do to reset is turn the key far enough for it to bump the motor over then leave the key in the run position for about ten to twenty minutes...might hook bat. to charger cause if it dies in process you have to start all over...the theft light will either blink then stay on or go out completly....

Videos on you tube showing how to do it . Just search GM anti-theft by pass . There are a few different ones, VATS - pass key - pass - lock , 1 ,2 an 3 .

1999 PONTIAC GRAND PRE WON'T START!

You'll have to figure out if it is a fuel or ignition problem.
Is the check engine light on ? Have you checked for trouble codes ?
It could be a relay, the ignition module, coil, fuel pump, or a list of other things including the anti-theft system.

I have a 97 Grand Am Which the theft system is keeping the car from starting. I have had the computer reset several times and it worked a couple of times but it no longer will let me start the car. Please...

Very Very Common GM Problem.
It is called a PassLock 2 system.

You can reset the computer yourself very easily.

Turn key to ON position (do NOT start). Leave in ON position for EXACTLY 10 MINUTES. As SOON as the anti-theft light quits flashing, and turns off, then IMMEDIATELY start the car.

That''s it!

You can do this everytime and it will work.

They do sell a passlock 2 bypass kit very affordable online that you can install but you won't have anti-theft but you won't have the problem either.

My grand am starts fr about 10 seconds perfectly then shuts off can't find the problem any input on this?

Is your anti theft light staying on when you turn your key into the on postion, if so you need to reset it. Just leave your key in the on position for abut 20 min and the light should go off then it should start.

Anti-theft

if the vehicle starts then stops and the anti-theft light is flahing you may need to re-set the pass-key system to do this you will need to atempt to start the vehicle and when it stalls leave the key in that position and watch the anti-theft light. it should flash on and off for about 5 to 10 minutes. when it stops flahing turn the ignition to off then try to restart your vehicle
