Question about 1999 Volkswagen Beetle

1 Answer

Engine will not turn over

1999 vw beetle 2.0 manual, turn the key ,dash lights come on, all aux items come on, but the car will not turn over. There is a single click and can hear the fuel pump come on and still nothing. Am searching what could be wrong.
Before this I rinsed the engine down with water due to the recent coolant flush. Its been a week now.

Basically the same problem, all the lights come on, there's a little, almost purring sound, and the car won't start. Vehicle is a 1999 VW Beetle, 2.0. I thought perhaps the starter has finally "burned" out.

Our Beetle did the same thing...prior to the event(or lack there of event), we had a new stereo installed and took the car to our local mechanic to check to see if the timing belt had ever been changed. Just bought the car last week. :(

My husband was also messing with the dome lights in the back seat. We went to the gas station, filled up, and when we finished, the car would not start. Not the battery, checked the fuses. Any suggestions?>

I have basically the same problem. Turn the key on and you here the fuel pump kick in, full instrument panel, turn the key to start and nothing happens. I have taken the starter off and had it tested, its good, battery has been teseted, it is good, checked the fuses and they are fine. I am at a loss as to what is wrong. It was running perfectly, I took my wife to work one day and when I went to go to work at noon it was dead. No prior problems. Just went dead. ?????

My guess is that water may have got into the starter solenoid area and maybe there is a bad connection down there. If the dash lights don't stay bright when you try to engage the starter motor then maybe it is an earthing lead with a corroded connection.

If these checks don't get you going then the best way forward is to get a list of fault codes from the onboard diagnostic system and take it from there. You could either go to a VW dealer, or if you are technically minded you could buy a £15 interface cable, download some free "VAG diagnostic software" and run it on a portable computer once you are confident.
If these suggestions do help you solve the problem, please give my reply a rating to help others judge my knowledge / guessing skills.
If they do not, please hold off on the rating and add a comment with more details so I can try to help you further. Cheers, D

When I turn the key my 1999 vw passat the engine light does not come on. What could cause that?

A burnt out bulb in you dash for that specific item on your dash will result in that light not coming on. If all the others are working and no running problems are present then I would focus on that first.

1999 VW Beetle problem 1 engine light stays on but it runs great what could be the problem? Problem 2 When I have a full tank of gas it won't start, what could be the problem?

the fuel system is what they call a recycling type (pump to rack back to tank)under pressure.if the filler cap air vent is blocked then the tank will have a partial vacuum restricting the flow of fuel, hence full tank, bad starting.
as far as dash warning lights are concerned i always recc you go to a skoda dealer(they are cheaper)and ask for a full diagnostic report.

1999 VW Beetle starts and instantly stalls

You don't have the proper key. The flip key assembly has a chip in it that lets the car keep running. Use old key assembly. To test put the old ket fob next to the ignition switch and see if it keeps running,

Car died and now alarm will not turn off.

manually lock and unlock the driver door with the key. ( i have the same problem) I think its a fuse problem, because if I keep locking and unlocking the car will finally give in and unlock. try opening and closing the door while doing this too.. it seems to work for me.
