Drivers side door, not opening

My drivers side door on my 1999 suburban is now not opening from the inside, what happened? How much is this going to cost to fix? Can I do it myself?

same problem here. It just stopped opening from the inside one day although at times if I pull the handle really hard I can get it open.

I have the same problem...I roll down the window and open from the outside. I met others that hve experienced the same problem. I have a 1999 1500 surburban with over 110 k miles.

I have had the handle mechanism replaced once on the driver's side, but it is now broken again and the passenger side doesn't open either. I, too, have talked to several others who have had this problem. I think it is a faulty design or something!

Had the same problem with the drivers door. I replaced the door handle and has been fine. I was told it has todo with the does are so heavy over time the pins kind of wear out and the doors drop just enough so it effects the operation of the door handles. I found trying to buy and install a handle by a dealership was insane in price, I and found a place online that was very inexpensive to buy parts for my Suburban and installed it myself. It is a very easy fix.

  • fnewport Dec 17, 2008

Yes, same problem on my 1999 GMC Suburban, 123,000 miles, driver's side door will not open from inside; will open easily from outside. Assume it happens on driver's side first because that door is used so much more often. My local mechanic says he will fix it tomorrow, but not sure what he's planning on doing.

VERY common issue.. the handle being replaced is ok.. but the actual metal rod that connects it to the latch needs bent a little to make it more responsive, what happens is over time this rod (which is bent slightly) will straighten, and the operator pulls harder on the handle which eventually brakes.. then replacing the handle will solve it for a while, until the trend repeats itself... VERY common, I have fixed hundreds in the shop so far...

Yes you can. I have already replace interior door handles at least 3 times in my 99 suburban.
Go to Autozone or Advance Auto. They have door handles for less than $20.
You will need a rivet gun with rivets greater than 1/8" to rivet the new handle.
The handles dont last because GM designed to break after so many pulls. Pewter metal just don't have the strenght.
This what I did: Disconnect negative battery terminal, remove door panel, drill out old rivet holding the assembly in place, disconnect the rods(2 of them) use a dead blow hammer to tap on the right side of the old handle assembly to free it from the door. Reverse procedure to install new handle

Its the inside plastic door handle pull. the plastic breaks where the inside pull mechanism attatches to it. Notice, the handle pulls out farther than the one on the other door, but still wont open the door.

Driver side door is jamed shut. ouside door handle and inside door handle broke. can't open door. how do i get the door open or can you take inside driver side door panel off with door closed?

i don't know about taking the panel off with the door closed, but you should be able to remove the inside handle. there should be just one screw holding it in it should be right in the middle usually it is covered with a plastic cap. once you get the handle off manually pull the mechanism and open the door.

My drivers side door wont open it is a 97 chevey

You will need to remove the door panel and find out what is broken or loose. Unscrew the arm rest and release the clips that you will find around the outer edge of the interior door panel. Once you have it open, look in the bottom of the door to find any parts that have come loose. You may want to remove the panel on the passenger side so you have an example of how a working one should look.

99 gmc suburban driver side door will not open from inside

My son and I both have 99 suburbans. We both had exactly the same issue. We found the the latch or handle inside the cab on the drivers side had broken off inside the door. Not a big deal. Go to a site called " Parts Train". You can buy virtually any part for your truck there. Get a new inside door handle, pull the panel and replace it. Not an easy job to getting door panel off or back on, but I guarantee this is the problem. You won't have a problem with the passenger side because it is used less. At Parts Train make sure you order the same color as your old one. Take your time and do a good job and you will have your fix.
