1991 honda civic wont start...

I have a 1991 honda civic 1.5 liter 4 door. We started having problems with it when it wouldent start when it was hot. we would sit and wait and kept trying and it would eventually start. We have replaced the fuel filter, fuel pump and it started right after we replaced the pump, the very next day we went to start it and it wont start at all. It cranks just wont start, battery has a good charge, new air filter, new radiator, not leaking gas, not smelling gas. not getting any fuel to the return side of the injector, even tho we replaced fuel filter and fuel pump. and like i said it started fine right after we put in the new pump, at 11 at night and it was about 8o degrees outside. Please help!

Hi, well I was just out there and it will ONLY start if it is cold.... My husband is gone to work and i am left here for 10 days by myself to figure it out on my own. I am not car savy but not stupid either lol. It is getting a spark i know that. i had it starting right up, when it would get warm it wouldent start back up after being shut off. we would take the water hose to it and it would start up, but if it is still warm it wont start and the check engine light would come on.

I have a 1992 Civic, and it started doing the same thing.

Well, like i said, the ignition module controls the ECM, which triggers the injectors. I would check to see if it's the old style module as a good starting point.

You didn't mention if you are getting a spark or not.

These early models were notorious for the ignition module going bad, and intermittently causing what you have described.

When the module starts to get fail, it doesn't sense that you are cranking the engine, therefore not opening the injectors / or triggering the ignition system, nor turning on the fuel pump.

It is located inside of the distributor, under the plastic dust shield below the rotor. If the module is beige / tan, it is the old style, and should be replaced. if it is dark grey / black, it is most likely not the culprit, and you can start looking for bad main relays, etc.

Does it fire if you give it a sniff of starting fluid or carb cleaner?

I had the exact same problem - the solution is to replace the main relay (or just run a soldering iron over it's contacts). I have a '91 Honda Civic Hatchback and it now runs beautifully after I retouched the solder on the circuit board of that relay.

My 91 civic runs and drives good but sometimes i shut it off and it wont start back up 4 awhile and then i hear a click and it starts back up please help

check your solenoid on your starter, usually when it get hot it fail until it cool off. a sign of starter going bad if you have to wait til the starter cool off before you can restart the car again. also check contact to the starter. if you having problems getting the starter to work you can get a small hammer and lightly tap the starter, 90% of the time it will kick over.
