Question about 1992 Nissan Maxima

Transmission Shift Problem...

My car shiifts from 1st to 2nd, but not to 3rd, or OD. The selector switch does not make a difference. Do they have modulator valves on them? The tranny worked fine until I replaced the motor, now it hesitates in 1st, shifts fine to 2nd, but doesn't do nothing at all after. What are some simple solutions to look for, and fix, and I mean cheap.

    i was told it has a default transmission sensor and will only do this if it senses some thing wrong in tranny. They Recommend replacing valve body as fix. repla

That trans is either an RE4FO2A or V or RE4FO4A orV.Things to check when no 4th gear are:Inhibitor switch or control linkage misadjusted,no revolution sensor,speed sensor,or fluid temperature sensor signal,damaged overdrive switch,shift solenoid A,or brake band.

The Pacifica will not shift past 4th gear. It shifts normally through 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gear. Their is no high reeving RPS, no clunking, no lurching. It will just not shift past 4th gear.


is there an OD button that might have been pressed .if it has lots of miles on it it could be needing a flush job . last one I got done was around 100.00 at jiffy lube.

Fluid Change has nothing at all to do with a fix
Nothing at all & on a worn trans can cause slipping
In your case I assume a shop gave it a try
The hard shifts tell you the valve body needs cleaning
I would first look at all body data related to the trans,whatever
your truck has TCM Module whatever
I would check all bulletins at a repair shop in their data base
I would have a mechanic ride with you to look at the trans
with the scan tool on it & watch the speed sensor & any
external sensors you may have for correct data
No also check the brake switch
Does it go into Lock-up in most gears (brake sw )

I suspect my 1995 windstar may have a bad modulator valve the fluid level seems to go away with no apparent leak and now it takes off in 2nd gear and won't shift to 3rd or od and the od light on t


I've been doing research on these vans. Seems I remember that if the OD light flashes >>> fluid level is low. Also, I read where Ford wants you to overfill fluid so as to allow you to go around corners without loss of lubracation. By this time you may have melted it down and bought a Honda. I have a 95 Teal color and just in flawless shape, however it won;t go in reverse. Just follow the hood ornament and don;t look back...right ! ?

You probably need a transmission pro to diagnose it properly, but it doesn't sound good. Was the original fluid you drained dirty brown? And did you see significant amounts of metal shavings in the transmission pan? The severe discoloration of the fluid is due to the clutch pack material wearing off and dispersed throughout the fluid. If the fluid smelled burnt, it is almost certain the transaxle is toast.

it may be a bad transmission modulator valve located on the side of your transmission,vacum operated. a sudden downshift or forward shift when unexpected is sign of a bad modulator valve or a vacum leak to the transmission.best to shop around for a garage w/references when it comes to transmission work though. check all the vacum lines to your transmision,you need to look on the underneath side of your truck on the side of transmission for a loose or disconnected vacum line on the side of the transmission. when you feel the vacum line,follow it to the top of engine,the vacum line is about 3/8th line,and may be disconnected or losing air. to make this short,when you drive the car,start out in low gear and shift the transmission,manually from 1st to 2nd to 3rd does it do right with no slipping? if it does this right and shifts great manually,the modulator valve on the side of the transmissions bad,or a bad vacum leak in-between.thank you for choosing fixya.com

Transmision starts out in 1st shifts to 2nd then third but will not shift into overdrive , but once it reaches 3rd gear ,it stays there when you come to a stop . after that it will only shift manually...


Sounds like your transmission is in limp mode. This is a fault mode in which the transmission either loses electrical power or the PCM deactivates all of the electronics. The transmission will default to max line pressure. The driver will have Reverse and 3rd, with manual 2nd available by putting the gearshift in 2 or 1 (doesn't matter). 1st, 4th, and TCC lockup will not be available. It will not hurt the car to drive it like this for short periods, but use manual 2nd to get the car moving, and be aware that the trans will generate more heat than normal while operating in limp-home mode due to increased torque converter slippage during 2nd gear starts and no lockup in 3rd gear.

The other from what you described, trans shifts 2nd to 3rd by itself in D or OD and locks the converter : ShiftA solenoid failed. Easy fix in the pan. Or a wiring problem from PCM to trans.. or PCM.

The driver will have Reverse and 3rd, with manual 2nd available by putting the gearshift in 2 or 1 (doesn't matter). 1st, 4th, and TCC lockup will not be available. It will not hurt the car to drive it like this for short periods, but use manual 2nd to get the car moving, and be aware that the trans will generate more heat than normal while operating in limp-home mode due to increased torque converter slippage during 2nd gear starts and no lockup in 3rd gear.

Trans shifts into gear harshly, car feels sluggish off the line
, No 1st, 4th or TCC lockup available, Manual 2nd, 3rd and Reverse are only available gears, CEL is on: Transmission is either in limp-home mode or has lost electrical power. If there are lots of error codes in the PCM, check the under hood fuse that powers the transmission, and if it pops again, look for a short in that circuit like an O2 sensor harness touching exhaust. Otherwise, check PCM codes for a particular fault in the transmission causing the PCM to put it in limp-home mode.

Car goes into gear but feels very sluggish like the brakes are dragging, but it will roll easily (starts out in 4th gear), you manually shift to 2 to get it moving, once it's moving you put it back in OD and the car shifts 3rd to 4th on its own and locks the converter at the appropriate time: ShiftB solenoid failed: Easy fix in the pan. Or a wiring problem from PCM to trans.. or PCM.

I have a 2002 Grand Am. Got the transmission checked and was told it's fine. It does not put out any codes and oil looked fine also. Around 3rd gear it feels to shift early. When I give it gas, it seems...


if your driving it normal your shift points should be from 1st to 2nd=18 to 22 mph
2nd to 3rd=28 to 32mph
3rd to od=48 to 50mph
these all change by how much throttle pressure is being use,
are you sure it's not fuel filter or plugs and wire surge your feeling
