Question about Oldsmobile Achieva

QDM I have a 1988 oldsmobile Achieva I need to have it smoged but the engin light is on. When I run the trouble code the only code that comes up is the QDM (quad-driver module) my repair book is a haynes and all it says about it is to take it to a shop or dealer. is there any way I can get the engin light off and does the QDM have any effect on the emissions, they told me that it won't pass smog if the light is on Thank you

I don't know what state you are in but if the light is on where I am the emmision machine will abort the test and fail the car. It doesn't care if it is emmision related or not. In your case it sounds like a new computer will do the trick. You can buy them rebuilt at any local auto parts store and they are mostly under 100 dollars for a car of that age. That was a common failure back than. You will have to use your original prom out of the old computer. The new one doesn't come with it. Just follow the instuctions in the box and you should be good to go. Make sure you disconnect the negative battery terminal before you change the computer or you can burn up the new one when you plug it in.Disconnecting the battery will also clear the code.Hope this helps you and let me know if you need any other info. Thanks...Dan

Well this old trick might work.disconnect your battery for about 5 minutes and hook it back up,that work for me.or you can take it to an autozone and they have a code reader to read and turn off the engine light.let me know.no if the check engine light is on it wont pass emissions.

Oil light comes on, loses power, stalls, restarts but engine very rough, oil level is fine but oil is very hot, smokes

Check for trouble codes. Smoke out where? out the exhaust? Do a compression test to check internal mechanical condition. Low compression would likely mean expensive engine repairs, no easy fixes. If the oil light comes on well before the engine loses power, have the oil pressure tested on a gauge. Low oil pressure could be a bad oil pump, worn crankshaft bearings, or a blockage in the oil passages throughout the engine, or a clogged pick-up tube and screen in the crankcase. How long do you want to keep whipping that achieva, Mark? Might be time to look for another pony !

Service engine soon light comes on and goes off

The service engine soon light comes on for many reasons..it could be as simple as CO2 sensor, or it may just be one of the lights that just stays on, ask your local GM garagre to reset the code for you..maybe cost you a couple bucks.

Does not accelerate

Newer cars are controled by the computer, only dealer can adjust it, usually the small garage can not handle the computer setting.

These are quad driver codes.... The drivers are part of the computer and it is rare for the computer to blame itself... Have the system checked again for stored codes and diagnose the system indicated properly by who ever you feel most comfortable with.
