Security light flashes and it won't start

We replaced the headgaskets on our 1996 Legacy 2.5L 4 cylinder. After putting everything back together and double checking the timing, it will start at first and then go out after 5 seconds and then not start again until waiting 5 or more hours. the security light flashes, could this be the problem and if so, how do we disarm the security system?

We tried unlocking the door with the key and putting the key in the ignition to ACC position and the security light still flashes and the car won't start.

We could not find code alarm programming button. The mechanic told me tonight that he started the car and let it run for a minute with no oil in it, and since then the security light flashes and it will only run for 5 or 10 seconds.

After he changed the belt, did he reset the car;s computer using the autodiagnostic tool ?? if not kindly askhim to do so.. The computer doesnt know its been changed and is a bit confuesed at the moment so it cuts off to prevent damages.. Ask the mechanic about this what i have just told you and see what he says..

Hi,

I would assume that when work was done on the engine, the battery was disconnected (even if for a short time only). If so, then the Anti-theft and Alarm System module goes into "Protect Mode" where the car's engine would turn off if somehow started and/or will not start until a given period of time (just as you have described).

A temporary workaround is to remove the door lock fuse but a more corrective procedure would be:
1. Turn ignition switch on
2. Hold button (pls see image) for 20 seconds or more (indicators would be the door locks will lock/unlock 3 times)
3. Turn ignition switch to off

This would also reset the key FOB so you should also press the "lock" button on the key FOB before releasing the black reset button (door locks will lock/unlock one more time--do this with each key FOB you own).

The image was originally posted here together with a more detailed explanation of the alarm system.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.

OK. If the alarm system on your car is on, and you don't have any parts damaged, this step should deactivate the alarm on your Subaru .
First Check the Fuse number 25 15a.

Cams wont turn after replacing headgasket

you need to start over with the timing process the valves are hitting the pistons because the cams are not in time rotate the pistons off tdc by about 90 degrees counterclockwise and reset the cams then turn the engine to tdc and put it together rotate by hand after installation to be sure it turns freely 2 full revolutions of the crank and all the marks should line back up

Well, since you had the heads off, the valve timing comes to mind...

Do you have compression now?

If not - rings,

If compression good, then did late spark burn exhaust valves and you are now chasing your real problem?

91 LEGACY STARTED RUNNING ROUGH

The cylinders are numbered as on the spark pack you changed. You might have done better putting the seafoam in the tank as an injector cleaner. Not sure why you changed so many parts, you seem to know how to get the codes from test connector lead hookup and the blink pattern. You might also want to check the fuel rail pressure and the crank and cam angle sensors. Before replacing the injector, swap the #4 injector with the adjacent one and see it the code moves with the injector or stays put. If the code stays on #4, then check the injector wiring, if it moves clean or replace the injector.
