If the pushrod has fallen, apply a generous dose of grease (you could if wanted completely fill that lower cavity, but not necessary), slide the rod upward, using something like needle nose pliers, and the grease will hold the rod up long enough to install the pump. Also, if you have one, it is also nice to remove the face plate under the fuel pump mounting plate, so you can remove the pushrod to inspect for excessive wear, and possible bending, (roll it on a smooth, flat surface) There should be two small screws just under the fuel pump. ('86 and older I believe).

If it is from the older GM casting there is a bolt hole that is in line with the rod. You can put a longer bolt in that hole and it will hold the rod. If it’s not there, push the rod into place. Bring the fuel pump down from the top and catch the rod with the pump lever.

Got a 1984 Chevy Camaro, and trying to replace the fuel pump which is connected to the side of the engine. There is a piston type thing in there that I cant get to pull back in order to fasten the new pump...

Removal & Installation When disconnecting the fuel pump outlet fitting, always use two wrenches to avoid twisting the line.
  1. Disconnect the fuel intake and outlet lines at the pump, then plug the pump intake line.
  2. Remove the two pump mounting bolts and lockwashers; remove the pump and its gasket.
  3. If the pump pushrod is to be removed from the V8, remove the two adapter bolts and lockwashers, then remove the adapter and its gasket.
  4. Install the fuel pump with a new gasket reversing the removal procedure. Coat the mating surfaces with sealer.
  5. Connect the fuel lines and check for leaks.

You should be able to be able to get the new pump in without having to worry about the rod....the pump has to go in just right....hard to explain, but you're not going to be able to move the rod.

Fuel pump wont pump

The electric fuel pump will have to much pressure for the carb, you need a pressure regulator to cut the pressure down to 5 psi. The reason the fuel pump won't stay running is because it gets its power from the oil pressure sensor by the distributor. Did you install this on the new engine and plug it in? The relay is what runs the pump for 5 seconds and shuts off.
