Either you have a bad oil sending unit, which is the thing that measures the oil pressure, or you have low oil pressure, which means you have a bad oil pump, cam bearings, crank bearings or a combination of all three.

I think your sending unit which sends a signal to the gauge needs replaced. Oil could be sludgy and gumming up inside the unit. But basically you could drive it for awhile but I suggest you get it in for servicing unless you want to try to fix it yourself. One quart low of oil could also do this. How many miles do you have on it?

Have oil pressure but gauge goes 80 to 40 to 0 doesnt tick at 0 turn off turn on gauge goes to 40 than to 0 no tickin

Possibly the gauge is off or bad. The only way to know your true oil pressure is to hook up a mechanical oil gauge to the fitting where your gauge sender is. Any mechanic's shop would have an oil gauge.

Oil pressure gauge goes to 0 when idled, but goes

You could try thicker oil or stop using synthetic or add some lucas oil treatment or change the oil. The sender could be bad too. A diag is in order because if there is no presure the engine will soon die.

Oil gauge flutuating

I think I'd be real tempted to check connection at oil sender, for clean and tight, and if that doesn't help, for the price, I'd change it, but not knowing exactly which engine you have, I couldn't give you a ballpark on oil sender switch. You can look it up or call autozone, or similar for price.

Oil pressure gauge 2000 jeep cherokee sport 4.0 6cyl.

It's probably the oil pressure switch. I have to replace min every 5 years or so because it does the same thing. Mine is mounted next to the filter on my '93. It's a little black thing with a plug in the end. You can get one at autozone for about $40.

Oil gauge reading on my dash

Any where from a quarter to half way is fine. After this the oil presser is getting to high. be sure you run 10-30 in the winter and do a oil change in spring time to 10-40 . oil will thin in hot temp. thus using a thicker oil like 10-40 in the summer will help keep oil presser down .
