Hi,

Your query, "hard to shift into second gear".This is a known common problem with Axiom's 4-speed automatic transmission specially after 60K, which tends to be worst when it's cold but improves when warmed up.

"how do you check trans fluid?" normally, you should not; it is supposedly maintenance free. Not unless, you notice leaking fluid from the accumulator cover.

"recalibration of the computer" has been known to correct some issues (especially for 2002 models) but you would have to check with your dealer about "flashing" your ECM. Doing so may likewise correct/improve some other concerns. There are even aftermarket computer/chips upgrade packages for this purpose.

"my trans is going out" sorry but looks like. You may want to explore other options for a couple of reasons:
1. replacement are reported to be not that readily available and often back order;
2. the expenses involved as well as the waiting/repair time may not be that practical if the car is a daily workhorse.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.

Is this an automatic or standard transmission? It makes a huge difference in diagnosing the problem.

With automatic transmissions slippage between gears is due to the band, drum, or friction plates inside the tranny. Low fluid levels generally cause the tranny to slip in all gears, especially first, and will feel as if it's not going into gear properly. Most Aamaco transmission shops will diagnose a problem and give a repair estimate at no charge. I would suggest find one in your area and having them check it. The problem sounds to be much greater than just the fluid level.

Check fluid level with engine running at idle. NOTE: Be sure that transmission fluid temperature is below 30 °C (86 °F).
Move the selector lever through all gear ranges.
Move the selector lever to "Park".
Let engine idle for 3 minutes and open the overfill screw (1).
Add ( DEXRON (R) -III) transmission fluid until it flows out over the overfill screw opening.
Let engine idle until a fluid temperature between 32 °C (90 °F) and 57 °C (135 °F) is reached, then close the overfill screw (1). Torque: 38 Nm (28 ft. lbs.) NOTE: Check transmission fluid temperature with scan tool. Minimum fluid level 57 °C (135 °F) Maximum fluid level 32 °C (90 °F) I will try to find the link showing the photo of trans openings if you need them. The same trans is used from at least 1999 on Truprs, so any view will do.

The trans in your vehicle is a 4L30E.The check, and fill plugs are in the pan.The fluid has to be checked after the vehicle is fully warmed up,engine running,in Park. The hard to shift into 2nd gear is kind of difficult to say, check the level, maybe have it scanned for trouble codes esp. if check engine is lit. Those particular transmissions have one weak area, and thats the Low gear,or first gear band and drum. That causes a symptom of slip and chatter on takeoff from a complete stop.

104,000 miles and slipping 2nd to 3rd is likely the third gear,or direct clutches. They are the smallest clutch in the unit, about 3" in diameter, and look like something you would expect to see in a lawn mower. This trans has been around (4L30E) for quite a while. The trans is from General Motors corp, and has been installed in vehicles from the Cadillac Catera,Isuzu Troopers and Rodeo's,Honda Passport,BMW 318 and 323's.Pulling the trans pan,the large primary pan (there are two) is another way of determining to a point, the condition and what's going on inside the trans.Ravignon planetary (sp).A french engineer came up with this compound planetary assembly and the pinions have to be aligned a certain way to mesh.Similar to aligning timing marks on an engine timing set,or belt.In 19 years of rebuilding automatics, this is the only transmission i know of to use this type of planetary.Any manufacturer,or car or truck.Just an interesting fact that probably isnt relative..

HI. On you Isuzo axiom.
to check the trans fluid you need to set parking brake, and put the shift selector on park.
OK. to check the oil level need to go under the car, locate the oil pan. you gonna see the bolts in the right corner of the oil pan,

1 is to drain the fluid.
the other one is to check the level and Refill. the one more close to the corner.
The oter way is with a machine, but if you don't have you will do as explained.

Thank you a hope this work for you.
I will send a picture OK.

OK.. IF you want to know If youe trans is bad or ,

Want to know if your problem is electrical or mechanical.

    Follow this simple steps.

Drive the trans at normal temperature, or about 20 minutes.

Allow the trans to go though all of the gears ranges.

See if the " check trans" lamp come on. Use a Diagnostic scanner to check for trouble codes.

IF during the drice you felt the problem but the lamp does not come on and no trouble codes are present..

Disconnect the harnes connector that coming from the PCM.

    From the shift selenoid connector.

Not the neutro safety switch. OK.

The trans now is on manually shifting.

you have to make the changes with the gear selector.

    Like a manual trans.

L- the vehicle operates in first gear.

2 - the Vehicle operates in second gear.

3 - the vehicle operate in third gear

If you felt all the gears ok. you have a electrical problem.

But if you felt the same problem as before.

    Your trans is bad.

I hope this information help you.

1991 toyota tercel 1.5 automatic trans. drove to my nephews house and then back home "17 miles round trip" about half mile from home car wont shift first gear to second

Jorge, as richie46 recommended check trans, fluid level. At higher mileages,150,000 the automatic transmission may not shift correctly. This can be caused by the throttle position sensor out of adjustment or a shift solenoid needing to be replaced. Typically the transmission does not need to be completely overhauled.

Transmission light blinking on and off but added fluid and shifts fine but does not accelerate either what could it be?

From these symptoms the stored trouble code will probably tell you the shift solenoid 1-2 in the transmission has failed, rendering the trans unable to find low gears.

I have 2002 Isuzu trooper 4X4, on a dashboard 2 lights are on, Engine Check and CHECK TRANS blinking every 2 seconds. Car itself operates very well, shifts gears etc. when I drive around town it works...

Have you checked for Diagnostic Fault Codes yet? Have your local auto parts store check for codes if you don't have access to a code reader. New Bluetooth OBD readers (ELM327) that pairs with your smartphone or laptop and a free app. (Called "Torque") Great reader for under $20 in most cases. Start there first. Is there a Temp Gauge for coolant? If so.......what is the operating temp doing during those highway trips? If the coolant is overheating, it may be heating the transmission too.
1. Check for codes.
2. Have cooling system checked, cleaned, flushed, and new coolant installed.

Recently had my transmission completely rebuilt including new torque converter on 2002 axiom. car gets approx. 20 miles per gallon. imediately after rebuild i am getting 12 miles to the gallon. nothing...

is the car going into Overdrive? have the trans shop check their work over and make sure everything is OK. If the trans checks out ok, have a reliable repair shop check scan data and see if they can see anthing out of spec.

Check trans light andcheck engine light came on

Sticky pistons in the valve body will cause your problem. When working properly the trans shifts smoothly. When stuck closed you must shift through the sequence in the manual mode as you are now
