Transmission downshifts erroneously

Transmission downshifts from D to 3 while driving and dash indicators highlight both gears at the same time. When this occurs, the car will only drive in 3rd gear. If I stop the engine and remove a battery cable and then put it back on, the transmission dash lights operate correctly and the car shifts ok for awhile, but; then this problem occurs.

    The problem turned out to be a bad TRANSMISSION CONTROL UNIT (TCU). A very excellent article is referenced below. It said that a common problem with the Accord TCU was a circuit within the TCU that burned resistor R41 caused by a leaky or shorted electrolyic capacitor C28. It suggested removing the TCU and removing the module cover and looking for burn't components. I did and sure enough R41 was burnt and C28 showed evidence of leaking. I took the TCU to a local TV Repair shop that would still repair circuit cards and we replaced R41 and C28. We modified the component selection a little to improve its reliability; We changed the R41 15 Ohm resistor to a "fireproof" resistor, not a carbon resistor and increased the voltage rating on the 220uf C28 capacitor from 35 VDC to 50 VDC. I re-installed the TCU into my '92 Honda Accord and it shifts correctly now. Time will tell if this is the final fix; but thank God for the referenced article - it saved me a ton of $$ and hard work. P.S. The Repair Shop only charged me $25.00.

    mazda 3 transmission codes po733 po744. Car will shift into 3 gear . No rpm surge . transmission will indicate 3 rd and 4 th gear on dash .

Sounds like the computer that controls the transmission.....but don't just go buy one because there is a diagnostic route.I just worked on two of those earlier this year,and the computer can drive you crazy.92 is pre OBD 2 or OBD anything,codes are pulled from the car manually.Passenger side interior,front kick panel.Remove the kick panel,locate BLUE colored TWO WIRE connector.It isnt connected to anything.Take a paper clip or wire,bend in a U,insert into connector.Turn the ignition switch on,engine off.This throws the trans computer into self diagnostic mode.Count the number of times...on the dash...the "S" light flashes.This is the code number.Now you look up the code number on a code chart.If there are NO CODES,the "S" light just comes on for 2 seconds when you turn the ignition on,then the "S" light goes back out.Thats normal operation,no codes.If no codes,you are back to square one.Welcome to code diagnostics.Remove paper clip.IF,there are any codes,they must be identified on a code chart,as a diagnostic trouble code for say...the shift solenoids,is a definite solution to this problem.Honda trans's are problematic on solenoids,shift and line pressure.So,check for codes,diagnose any codes and repair them.If no codes,or codes have been repaired,and the same symptom still persists,then it's time to look at the computer,or PCM.The PCM is located either under the carpet on the passenger side front,near the firewall,or under one of the front seats.Remove the PCM,take to a clean bench,and dissasemble.Remove outer cover and look,don't touch,look for a capacitor that may have exploded.I had very similar problems on one....the gear selector indicator would indicate Park and Overdrive....AT THE SAME TIME,when actually in Overdrive,and the car would failsafe to 3rd gear.It was a bad PCM,but did not see an exploded capacitor inside that one.Good Luck...Hondas,gotta love em.

I had the same problem... when it rained my D4 light would come on and stay on, and only allow me to shift from 1st to 2nd gear manually and no further! I guess it only happened when it was raining or humid because something was fried in my TCU. I found a few articles about it on line, and found info on how to determine which TCU I needed and replace it. I found one with the same serial number on ebay, bought it for $65, took the one in my car out (it was under floorboard on passenger side, a little hard to reach but possible), popped the two plugs out of it, put the new one in and it's doing great! Thanks to sites like this and others we no longer have to feel alone and like we HAVE to go to a garage for every little thing. A big cheers to those who posted about this, THANKS!

Hello
The Engine and Automatic Transmission (not applicable to manual transmissions) in this vehicles drive train are fully electronically controlled by a computer called the PCM and TCM (Power Train Control Module, Transmission Control Module). When a problem like this or other drive-ability related problems occurs the computer stores a record of the problem (there are of course some exceptions to this, like the fuel pump, engine coolant temperature sensor and MAF sensor for instance) in the form of a fault code in its memory, to read these fault codes you must have the systems memory scanned with a special tool. Once the fault code(s) are read you then must perform the appropriate diagnostic testing to find and resolve the problem(s) DO NOT REPLACE ANY PARTS UNTIL A TRAINED TECHNICAIN HAS DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM TO AVOID SPENDING YOUR HARD EARNED MONEY ON PARTS THAT MAY NOT CORRECT THE PROBLEM. Also always check fuel pressure for correct spec for your make and engine type.

1989 pathfinder transmission 3spd w/ overdrive works great when first started, then downshifting starts way early, started after alternater wentbad


Do you mean upshifting starts way early? Going from 2nd to 3rd in other words?
Ireally don't know your transmission,but the alternator problem might've possibly spiked and hurt your shifting solenoids in the ******. don-ohio (:^)

My 1989 Jeep with AW4 transmission does not downshift or ?


This model has a tranny computor under the dash on the right side screwed to the bottom of the dash. If I remember correctly, there is also an inline fuse attached to the harness. Check the fuse.
