Recently while driving my 2000 mercury cougar either revs way too high(4,000-6,000 rmps) and delivers very little if any power, or it runs around 2000-2500 but back fires. Now it is turning over but not starting even with a jump. It's not the alternator or the battery- both have been replaced in the last year. I tried fuel injection fluid as well. Could it be the spark plugs? Please help!!!

I wondering if you tensioned the belt correctly and does the same belt drive both units, Have you reconnected the little wires into the back of the alternator as well as the heavy wire
Check all the vacuum hoses and see if they are broken or disconnected. Surge in power issues, idling issues, engine stall while driving, all are related to vacuum hoses. Give a try.
