Question about Toyota Camry

1 Answer

1994 Toyota Camry. I was driving on the hwy at 60mph when it just died. No fire. I had to replace the distributor a few months ago when the same thing happened. I checked the coil and found the primary resistance was 1.7 ohms (Specs 0.4 to 0.5 ohms). I replaced the distribuotr and still no fire. I found the replacement dist had no air gap (Bent mounting plate) and returned it for another dist. The next replacement distributor had the following specs: Primary resistance 0.7 ohms Secondary 11.06 ohms Pick up coil G+ to G- 217 ohms Ne+ to Ne- 432 ohms Air Gap 0.008 The only thing slightly off is primary resistance (Specs 0.4 to 0.5). Would this keep the vehicle from starting? The EFI and AM2 fuses are good. The coil positive terminal has 11.99 DCV when the switch is on (Switch is good). The igniter was replaced with one from a known running car. Still no fire. The ECM show Code 1 normal. I disconnected pickup coil and air temp sensor and turned veh over numerous times and received corresponding trouble codes (so ECM is working). The only thing I've noticed is that the coil high tension lead has 11.95 DCV when the switch is on but the engine is not turning over. There is no change when the engine turns over. Should the coil high tension lead have voltage when the switch is on but not turning over? My gut is telling me the replacement coil may be bad but I'm not sure. Any help would be appreciated.

It sounds like you know what you're doing. The two things I did not see covered are: do you have fire at the spark plugs: you checked the efi fuse but I see no indication that fuel to the cylinders has been verified. Have you pulled a spark plug to see if fuel is reaching the cylinders?

The mass airflow (MAF) sensor could be at fault as your mechanic should know from his diagnosis. The intake air control (IAC) should be checked as well.

I have a 1994 Toyota Camry and it won't start. It

You might also check the AM2 fuse in the engine compartment fuse box. There is a "noise supression" capacitor inside the distributor that shorted out on my '93 camry. You can replace the capacitor for about $10, but the capacitor is kind of hard to get at. I had to remove the distributor to get at it, but if you are a good mechanic, you can probably repair it in place.

With the AM2 fuse blown, I was getting crank, but no fire.

Died driving down the road, no problem turning over, but won't start

It souds like the same problem i had a few months ago, have your timing belt checked, i am most certainly sure that it is the belt, usualy the belt breaks, or slips off the pulley.......hope this is helpful.

1994 Toyota Camry Won't start.

you should check 3 things. AIr, Fuel, and "spark"
your cars could have many problems. Ignition module, fuel injectors, Mass Airflow Sensor.
You should check into all of these 3 things.
a crank-no start could be many things.
it could even be a cam positions sensors resistance going up when the engine heats up. Cracnk- no start means testing. n like i said
The motor is getting Air, There is Fuel being put into the cylinders, and the Spark plugs are firing.
