Check to see if your efi fuses are okay maybe your injectors are not working. if this happens there will be no fuel entering the cylinders

Hi Jmaes, no efi is working ok injectors are fine....can put petrol ininlet manifold and car will run...but cuts out as there is no continual fuel supply

  • james_cockbu Jan 05, 2011

i would say that your injectors are not feeding the fuel or you are not getting fuel to your injectors maybe your fuel filter is blocked. can you follow the fuel line from the filter to where it goes into the fuel rail to feed the injectors and crack the bolt that holds the fuel line and see if you have any fuel there. if no fuel there go back to your fuel filter and see if there is fuel present. you said your fuel pump was working may i ask how you checked that it may help me think of other reasons.

  • biggs123 Jan 06, 2011

when car wouldnt start a roadside assist mechanic came and had a look and reckons he could hear the fuel pump clicking on or something like that...we think that the problem is probably something with the fuel pump as car just didnt start and was not running rough or anything like you would expect if it was fuel filter ...think they checked the injectors and they had fuel in them....hubby is gonna disconnect fuel pump and check fuel line from that end first...will let u know

  • james_cockbu Jan 06, 2011

look forward to hearing from you about this. the clicking you say i would think would be the relay sending power to the fuel pump but that does not mean the pump is working. the fuel line check will tell you if the pump is working.

  • biggs123 Jan 07, 2011

Hi James, Hubby checked fuel pump and it is actually working as such have been able to start car by apply pressure on one of the fuel lines...not sure which one...he thinks it is either the pump not building enough pressure or maybe fuel filter is blocked...car has actually been running,,,but wont start on its own...wll see what happens tomorrow

  • james_cockbu Jan 07, 2011

hi again after reading your comment this time i think your pressure regulator is not working hubby would be applying pressure to the return line. hope this helps you out

  • biggs123 Jan 08, 2011

Hi James, we changed fuel filter and have been able to get car to start...needs to be primed a bit...can u tell me where we locate this fuel pressure regulator...model is 2001 9-3 turbo ...seems like we can get fuel to the engine starts and runs fine...but after standing needs to be primed to start...thanks

  • james_cockbu Jan 08, 2011

hello again i am not 100% sure but it will be on the fuel rail at the oppisate side to the fuel pump side is usually workrd via a vacuum so should also be a small maybe 5mm or 1/4 inch line to it.i just googled a pic of your motor and if your motor has a tappet cover or rocker cover with saab and 16 valve written on it in rather big letters i think your pressure regulator is above or oposite the 2nd a in saab. please check your vacumm line first as it only takes a little split or crack for it to malfuntion. hope this helps and i am sorry for my spelling. let me know how you go

  • biggs123 Jan 08, 2011

Hi James, the engine on my car has a turbo cover and on the direct injection says SAAB (left hand side as you stand in front of motor) and ecopower...on turbo cover has 2.0 turbo (on right hand side) I live in australia so not sure if engines are pretty much the same as where you are (assume US)...am appreciating all the help and can live with spelling mistakes!!!!

  • james_cockbu Jan 08, 2011

hi i am also in australia north qld. i think the picture of the motor i have is different. but can hubby follow the line he crimped to make the car run. i am sure that it is the return line so if he can follow it to the fuel rail it will join onto the fuel pressure regulator. i will try to find a pic ture of your motor or if you have a digital camera you could take a pic and email it to me my email is james_cockburn@hotmail.com.

Car wont start

My routine to check non-starting motors: (petrol/gas models)

  • Check immobilizer status
  • Check fuel supply -does it reach the fuel rail when starting. If not OK, check 12v supply to fuel pump when starting. If OK, fuel pump maybe dead.If not present, check fuel pump fuse and relay.
  • If fuel supply is OK, check spark ignition. If not OK, follow the supply circuit backwards to the ECM. Coils and/or ignition amplifier connector should have one 12v supply to it when ignition switch is on.
For Diesels with 'common rails' you can take same approach for fuel. No ignition testing possible. The diesel fuel pump still needs battery power. It will make some sound when IGN is on. If not, check ALL fuses and relays.

SOUND LIKE FUEL PUMP NOT WORKING.TURN ON IGNITION SWITCH LISTEN FOR FUEL PUMP NOISE.SEE IF PUMP RUNNING IN FUEL TANK.IF NOT CHECK FUEL PUMP FUSE AND RELAY.IF ALL IS GOOD FUEL PUMP FAULTY.HAVE CAR CODE SCAN FOR FAULTY PCM AND ECM WHICH CONTROLS THE FUEL PUMP PRESSURE TO THE FUEL INJECTORS.

Cranks but wont start ,sputters but wont start has fuel in tank, it is a 1999 cougar V-6

Hi!!It sounds like your fuel pump is not working. Check fuel pump relay on engine compartment fuse box have somebody to turn the ignition key to the RUN position, DO NOT CRANK ENGINE (feel if the relay clicks when the key is turned, it will only be energized for a couple of seconds and then you should feel when it gets de-energized. if relay is OK, remove the fuel tank gas cap and repeat the same key operation, listen to the fuel pump coming in, again this will be running only for a couple of seconds, try a few times until you are sure one way or the other. If fuel pump works, then replace fuel filter and try to start vehicle. If vehicle does not start. You need to check fuel pump pressure. borrow a tester form Autozone or similar auto parts store. The fuel pressure should be between 30-40 psi with key ON engine OFF. If pressure is off either way, replace fuel pump. Here is how to hook up the fuel pressure tester 1kbron_71.jpg
Good Luck! A HELPFUL - 4 THUMBS - rating for this solution would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for using FixYa.

Wont start

The fuel pump jump started? The fuel pump relay is in the dashboard relay center. The fuel pump is inside the fuel tank. The pumps do fail entirely nd the fuel pump should make some sound if it's running. The fuel filter is on the firewall on the drivers side. It has a bleeder screw in the top of the bnjo bolt that holds the fuel line onto the filter. Loosening this bolt should release fuel pressure. With the bolt loose try to get the pump running ( knock on the relay, fuel tank, while cranking the engine) if fuel flows the engine should run if you don't have other problems. Low battery will crank the engine but not turn on the fuel pump and or the injection system and even the ingtion system. It may still crank and sound OK. Voltmeter the battery with the engine cranking, Less that 10 volts it's unlikly to start. John

Fuel pump wont shut off. It sounds like it goes thru normal cycle and it is like it shuts half way off when turning car off. I pulled tank and pump did find a short, I fixed it, BUT, after hooked battery...

Check the fuel pump relay. Unplug it the next time you have this problem and check for power (12vdc +)at all of the four terminals--only one should have power when the key is off. If this is the case the trouble is probably the relay itself. If two of the terminals have power, then the relay is likely find and you have to look further to find the source of the problem.

Engine will not start.turns over fine.ran fine

run scanner for trouble codes, some auto parts stores   will do this for free, check fuses, check for fuel at fuel rail, if not check fuel pump relay, you should here it click when key is first turned on, if not try to bend tabs slightly to make good contact, if no click, replace relay if so turn key off then on listen in tank with cap off for whirling sound if tank, if not could be fuel pump, sorry

Dodge caravan turns over wont start all lights work

possible bad fuel pump. check fuel pump relay under hood. drivers side fuse panel. swap fuel pump relay with another identical relay to rule out possible bad relay. listen for whining sound back by fuel tank. the fuel pump is in the fuel tank. Another option....you can also check the pressure in the fuel rail, but be careful not to squirt gas in your eyes or face.

Ive never seen a car start up just fine after leaving the key on all night. I would try jumping it. If the voltage is too low it wont start.

TRUCK WONT START AFTER IT WAS PARKED

the only thing this could be is the fuel filter is plug or the fuel pump is out before you do all of this check your fuel pump relay first before you go to the first two.
