1996 Chevy cavalier Over heats smells like exhaust coming from coolant reservoir any suggestions ?

It sounds like a head gasket failure or a possible cracked cylinder head.
The engine combustion exhaust gasses are leaking into the coolent system and causing the overheating.
Have you noticed a loss of coolent with no apparent leaks?

Try taking the coolent header tank cap off and placing your hand over it creating a seal. If after a few seconds you feel pressure building and when lifting your hand slightly you'll hear the pressure release as a hiss confirming either of the two I mentioned.
Only do this if the temperature is low or you could burn your hand.
If the engine has overheated badly it could of warped the head needing it to be skimmed if it's aluminium. Likewise if the engine block is aluminium also but them two are only likely if you cooked the engine so I would say firstly it's a failed head gasket.
I hope this helps you out.

Engine overheated , got second hand engine but still overheating after new Radiator and thermostat. What could be the problem

-Remove the thermostat and flush the engine back and forward couple time with water. Then re install the thermostat back to. Make sure the thermostat's spring or bottom go inside the engine.
-Make sure the water pump is in good shape, belt drive the water pump must be good tight.
-Try this you should be good to go.

Toyota MR2 spyder engine failure

when an engine overheats that bad , the cost to rebuild is generally close to a fully reconditioned exchange engine
check the wreckers / junk yards for a good engine of the same family group as is on the compliance plate /build plate on your car ( many such places import engines with low miles/klm that are in top condition
the rebuild will include new head or head rework , new pistons and rings , bearings , engine re-bore and all of that will not include the labour charges
burning a motor is not an inexpensive experience and that is why I suggest a second hand motor or a service exchange motor for an accredited engine reconditioning shop

Heater blowing cold air and engine overheating for 2002 Dodge Intrepid

first check engine coolant levels, add if low, secondly, check waterpump for proper funtioning, then if the vents are still cold, start looking at the heater hoses for issues and ther is a control valve that lets hot fluid enter the car..if this is locked or stuck you should be able to move the lever by hand and see if it works.. its normally vaccuum operated..good luck

95 oldsmobile cutlass cierra v6 ... wont turn over

One Click usually indicates a bad starter. Since the vehicle overheated I would try this first. With the key off and the battery disconnected try turning the engine over by hand. If you can't get the engine to turn by hand than you have bigger problems probably associated with the overheating. If you can turn it over by hand than you need to check the starter. Make sure the small wire on the starter has power anytime the key is in the crank position. Make sure the large wire has power all the time. If both of those are good than you can also try tapping on the starter, key word tapping, with a hammer while a helper holds the key in the crank position. BE PREPAIRED FOR THE STARTER TO ENGAGE AND START THE ENGINE! If the starter works after tapping than replace it. Let me know if you have any questions and I'll do my best to answer them. Thank you for using FixYa.com!

Just bought a second hand 1994 Jeep Cherokee XJ - didn't check coolant or water levels. Was driving along highway noticed engine overheating way beyond the red, pulled over to find no coolant or water,...

If the system is loosing coolant, it has be leaking from some place, either from a connection, gasket or out of the tail pipe. When you refilled the cooling system, did you start the engine and inspect the vehicle while it was running and at operating temp?

Over heating

If this vehicle has the original or old(defective) thermostat, this can cause overheating if its stuck closed(defective). The engine cooling fan has a clutch, If defective the fan will just spin, not fast enough to cool the engine and cause overheating. The radiator is clogged, can cause overheating. A simple check for the radiator is when vehicle has been running awhile, engine is hot, shut the vehicle off and open the hood and carefully reach your hand down between engine fan and radiator and quickly palm the radiator at the top, middle, and bottom and if the warm temp by feel is about the same, most likely the radiator is not the problem. Good luck, best regards.

Overheating Toyota Camry 2004

Check the Tension on your Belt and the Waterpump. I have never Heard of someone Needing to Replace the Entire Motor just for an Overheating Issue unless it has been Driven too far while Hot or Someone Puts Cold Water in a Hot Motor. Check these things first and get a Second Mechanic to check it out Before you Proceed with an Unneccessary Replacement. Please Rate my Response, I need all the Help That I can Get! Thanks!

Overheated engine

Hi i would say have ago at rebuilding this yourself, Get a Haynes Manual for the car and that will tell you everything you need to know, The hardest part for you would be getting the timing correct and tightening the head bolts correctly (all in the manual tho) Look at it this way if it all goes wrong you wanted to get a second hand engine anyway, and you will learn alot in the process, Dont forget if you need any help along the way people are here to help, Good luck if you go for it, Steve

Engine replacement due overheating problem

The syrup you are seeing (if it is white) is emulsification (water mixing with oil) with all due respect that car is too old to throw a lot of money at.
The emulsification would tie in with the overheating problem, this sounds more like a head gasket gone or a crack in the cylinder head.
I would take it to somewhere else and get a quote for a replacement cylinder head gasket and valve clean job, don't bother to check your cylinder head for cracks because crack testing is an expensive service, go to a breakers yard and get a second hand head to replace yours with.
