2003 Grand Marquis digital speedo only reads "0". All other displays read correctly. Could it be the speed control? If so, where exactly is it located?

The speedometer provides speed information based on a speed/distance pulse signal from the vehicle speed sensor (VSS). The VSS is mounted on the speedometer driven gear in the transmission.

VSS C1088
Raise the drive wheels off the ground. While rotating the driveshaft, measure the AC voltage between the VSS C1088 pin 1, circuit 679 (GY/BK), component side and the VSS C1088 pin 2, circuit 676 (PK/OG), component side.
  • Is the voltage between 1.3 volts AC to 6.1 volts AC?
Yes GO to E2 .

No CHECK and INSPECT the speedometer drive gear. INSTALL a new VSS if the speedometer drive gear is OK. TEST the system for normal operation E2 CHECK CIRCUIT 679 (GY/BK) AND CIRCUIT 676 (PK/OG) BETWEEN THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER AND THE VSS

My 2003 Mercury mountaineer low beams won't come on

Visual Inspection Chart Mechanical Electrical
  • Headlamp switch
  • Multifunction switch
Pinpoint Test B: The Low Beams Are Inoperative
Normal Operation
The headlamp switch sends power through circuit 13 (RD/BK)/15 (RD/YE) to the daytime running lamps relay, then to BJB fuses 42 (10A) (RH headlamp) and 43 (10A) (LH headlamp) through circuit 13 (RD/BK). After passing through the fuses, voltage is then carried through circuits 161 (DG/OG) (RH headlamp) and 160 (DB/WH) (LH headlamp) to the low beam headlamps. Circuit 1205 (BK) is the ground circuit for the headlamps.
Possible Causes
  • Circuit 13 (RD/BK)/15 (RD/YE) open
  • Circuit 697 (BN) open
  • Circuit 196 (DB/OG) open
  • Circuit 1205 (BK) open
  • Circuit 632 (GY/OG) open
  • Circuit 12 (LG/BK) open
  • Multifunction switch
  • Daytime running lamps relay

  • Key in OFF position.
  • Disconnect: Headlamp Switch C205a.
  • Place the headlamp switch in the headlamps ON position.
  • Place the multifunction switch in the low beam position.
  • Measure the voltage between the headlamp switch C205a-8, circuit 196 (DB/OG), harness side and ground.
  • Is the voltage greater than 10 volts?
GO to B2 .

REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation. B2 CHECK THE HEADLAMP SWITCH
  • Carry out the headlamp switch component test. Refer to Wiring Diagrams Cell 149 for schematic and connector information.
  • Is the headlamp switch ok?
GO to B3 .

INSTALL a new headlamp switch. REFER to Headlamp Switch in this section. TEST system for normal operation. B3 CHECK CIRCUIT 13 (RD/BK)/15 (RD/YE) FOR AN OPEN
  • Disconnect: Multifunction Switch C202c.
  • Measure the resistance between headlamp switch C205a-9, circuit 13 (RD/BK) and the DRL relay:
    • (early build) pin 3, circuit 15 (RD/YE)
    • (late build) pin 5, circuit 15 (RD/YE)

  • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
CARRY OUT the multifunction switch component test. If the switch tests OK, INSTALL a new multifunction switch. REFER to Section 211-00 . TEST the system for normal operation.

REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
  • Battery junction box (BJB) fuse(s):
    • 16 (15A)
    • 22 (20A)
    • 42 (10A)
    • 43 (10A)
    • 46 (20A)

Brake lights won't work. All other lights work including turn signals, flashers, back up, etc.

Dear Bearcoop02,
First thing to check is your fuse # 13, 20 amp in the interior fuse box. This is the brake light fuse. If the fuse is ok and all three brake lights are out, pull one of the lamp assemblies out and check for power with the pedal pressed down. Left should be LG/OG and right should be OG/LB. If the power is good,it is probably bulbs. The third light and the brake lights have different grounds.
If there is no power, back up to the stop lamp switch. This switch is located above the pedal,on the pivot. It has two wires. LG/RD should have power all the time and the LG wire when the pedal is applied. If there is no power, the switch is bad.
If there is power, you will need to remove the steering column covers to gain access to the wires into the multifunction switch. Again, with the pedal pressed, the light green wire should have power. This is the input to the switch. If ok,check LG/OG and OG/LB for power with the pedal pressed. If no power, the multifunction switch needs to be replaced.
This should give you the information to trace the circuit back. If you need anything else, don't hesitate to drop me a line. Thanks, Chuck

You will have to replace the blower motor resistor. It is located right beside the blower motor, look to the right of motor next to the rubber hose on the side of the blower motor,it will have a four wire connector to it the wire colors are OG/BK,LB/OG,RD/OG,and BK, it will be held in by 2 screws. You will have to remove the battery and battery tray to access it.
