Question about Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera

1 Answer

My car has been acting strange. The brake light will cut on and off, but the is no problem with the brakes I have had them check, and I maintain thee needed amount of brake fluid in the car. Today the car began to shake and cut off several times before I got home. I have a feeling it needs spark plugs but cant be sure.

The brake light problem is likely the fluid level sensor - either mounted in the cap or in the side of the master cylinder. Typically these sensors are not expensive or difficult to replace and doing so may cure the problem. You did not state what vehicle or year you have so I cannot advise which type of sensor you have. Looking at the cap will tell which kind, since the cap mount type has a small wiring harness in the cap. You may need the VIN ( Vehicle Identification Number) to get the correct sensor and your local parts store should be able to tell you where exactly it is. As far as the shaking and cutting off, it may not be the spark plugs - it could also be the fuel filter needs changing, or plug wires, dirty or plugged EGR ( Exhaust Gas Recirculation) valve,Throttle Position Sensor ( not very likely), or Mass Air Flow sensor among other things. A hands on diagnostic is needed to be sure of the problem - you could throw a lot of money at this problem and still not cure it. Is the check engine light coming on? If so, then a code scanner can be connected that will guide you to the problem. Most shops will scan your vehicle for little or no fee, hoping for the repair job and, depending on your skill and financial condition, it may be the best route to go for fixing the problem. I hope thias helps and please rate my solution - and Thanks for using Fixya!!

My buick 2012 enclave traction light comes on then the vehicle starts acting strange. So I turn off to reset and it function properly for and then it happen again. Is this a problem that can be fiXed

Have you checked your tire pressures lately? The way traction events are detected is by sensing the wheel speeds. If one is going faster or slower, it is assumed that one wheel is "slipping," whether it is sliding (like a brake locked up), or spinning (like one wheel spinning on ice or mud). But a lower pressure tire spins faster than a fully inflated one because the "effective radius" from the center of the wheel to the road surface is less, so it acts like a smaller diameter wheel. You could have a bad brake caliper which is locking a wheel occasionally, due to brake pad contamination with brake fluid.

Check the ABS system for electronic errors. It could be a wheel sensor.

Thanks for your quick reply. The brake switch

I didn't see the first question ... I'm glad you were satisfied ...

No, what you describe is not normal ... the alarm should not sound when you step on the brake. You have something crossed.

BEWARE ... there are wires down there that control the air bag ... they should be specially marked ... just so you know they are there ... dont mess with them.

Engine light on, when I apply the brake lights go dim and act as if the car wants to cut off. also pulls funny. I need to know what could be wrong. the mechanic says it could be a computer problem.

Did your mechanic tell you what code triggered the check engine light on,It sounds like your alternator is not charging enough,Then you apply the brake lights which take more power away from the engine.
