The a/c compressor does not engage. The blower fan does work. Where do I go from here?

I forgot to mention- the fuse is ok. (sorry)

Sorry to be slow getting back to this; I was called out of town. The blower fan still works fine, and switching the relays had no effect. (As I said in the beginning, the blower fan works fine.) I don't know if it is significant, but the fan speed does (and did already) increase (as it should) when the a/c switch is moved to "max". I read someplace about two a/c relays under the dash, but it didn't say where and they are not referenced in any of my available resources (manuals, diagrams, schematics, etc.). Any thoughts there? This 100 degree heat gets rough on the commute.

I am rally sorry the "mechanics" couldn't figure this out, except to harp on the fuse and fan, both of which I stated are just fine. It looks like I wasted my money. I read in one book that there are two relays under the dash, but didn't say where. They aren't in the relay panel behind the fuse block.

If the compressor does not engage with a good fuse, and all the wires are in good condition and connected properly, then the solenoid that engages the system is shot. You will need to replace the compressor.

Start by testing the compressor wires and connections for proper voltage and corrosion.

The relays should be marked AC on them somewhere, and will be mounted directly behind the climate controls, most likely on the firewall.

By the way, apparently you have no idea how hard it is to diagnose a problem over the internet without the vehicle being in front of you. Especially when the person with the problem doesn't get back to you and say yes or no to the initial suggestion, so you can move on to the next area in line. There are several parts that need to be checked in a specific order, in order to run down the exact problem component, and because there are so many parts in an AC system that could cause a malfunction, getting the right solution the first time would just be luck. It's this way even when you take it to a repair shop that actually gets the hands on diagnostic. So, keep this in mind next time you ask for help over the internet before you get snippy, it's a process that needs a little communication, and you may have to go back and forth several times in order to get it right.

check to see if fan is moving freely. Those older fans tend to **** out pretty fast. Bypass the wires on the temp sender and see if the fan works that way. In the engine bay there should be 2 black relays. One is for the ignition and the other is for the fan.

'90 Volvo 740 2.3l turbo water pump install instructons needed

Go to an auto supply store like PEP boys or Advance Auto, etc., and buy a Haynes Repair Manual for the 740. You may be able to consult one at your local library for free. Even if it doesn't cover your model year, the replacement instructions are pretty much the same for all years. in fact even a 240 Volvo manual would be essentially the same. Pay particular attention to the installation instructions....you have to slide the pump on, and then rotate it a few degrees clockwise to make the upper o-ring seal. Good luck!

It is a right hand thread and you usually need an impact gun. Take the fan out of the way, to give you more room, I have found that helps.
