Question about 1999 Infiniti.5 QX4

Open Question

My 1999 QX4 was running rough when my daughter shut it off. She later went to drive it and it ran fine for about 4 blocks. She called and I brought the gas can just in case. After putting 3 gallons in she started it up and it ran great to the gas station. After putting another 5 gallons in it started rough again and then died. I had it towed home where I sprayed starting fluid in the air cleaner to determine if it was a spark or a gas problem. It is a spark problem for sure as the starting fluid had zero impact. What do I need to check and or replace?

Sounds like it could be a fuel pump problem if you can get access to the fuel pump try tapping on it a few times. Sounds crazy but it works if it keeps doing it then you definently need to replace it. I would try that also if your lights are dim your battery isn't keeping a charge have the altenator checked. Hope that helps

SOURCE: 1999 Infiniti I30 Starting problems

This will almost always be the starter itself. If I had a dollar for all the bad starters I've seen on Infinitis I'd be rich. Even though they are far less expensive, rebuilt starters are definintely not the way to go. I've seen them last 1 or 2 days, or 1 or 2 years.  The starter will do absolutely nothing when it is bad, you turn the key and no noise, no clicking, no nothing. Often times you can have someone tap on the starter with a bar or something as you try to turn it over. It is down low on the drivers side of the engine.  If it starts, don't bank on it starting again.  But that is one way you can diagnose it yourself. I just would not recommend an auto part store starter.

Have your fuel pump pressure tested!

Your car could be running great because its demand for fuel pressure is met at idle. But at part and wide open throttle you fuel pump could be running aground.

A mechanic with a fuel pressure gauge can drive the car around and see if the pressure falls flat during off idle throttling.

Good luck and be careful!

Sounds like it's not getting fuel. Check fuel pressure at the fuel rail. If low, make sure the pump is running. If the pump is running, but no pressure at the rail, check fuel, filter. Get back to us with result of these checks.

Daughter's 1999 Jetta; smelled burnt rubber when leaving work last week. Car ran fine. Yesterday, started squealing (sounded like belt slipping) when started. Later in day, she turned car off and sat with...

It sounds like the alternator belt or the alternator is going bad. The squealing sound was probably the alternator belt. the alternator belt might need to get tightened or replaced or you may need a new alternator. The alternator keeps the battery charged. When the alternator goes bad the battery can not be recharged. You also should keep the power steering fluid up to par or the power steering will go bad on you.

Check engine light

Please be advise that if you drive this and the check engine light is flash on and off. you should not drive it any more till you find the problem because you can cause more damage to the truck if the light is flash. there are many things that could cause this running condition: TPS, EGR, Bad injector, Idle air control and more would need to know codes that are in the computer, engine size 2 or 4 wheel drive, does it have A/C, Cruise, traction control, ABS brakes, then I maybe able to help you

I own an '01 S-Type and have had to many problems to list, however 3 months ago mine started riding rough, the check engine light actually started blinking and it shook pretty bad especially at stop lights (although it didn't shut off) I drove it straight to the shop and they said it was a bad ignition coil (coil #4) - $135 total and it ran fine. 2 months later coil #5 went. I was advised that if you take it to the dealer they will replace all 6 ignition coils at once charging you over $1,000. They are only about $60 a part stores. Good Luck I'm getting rid of my Jag this week! What a pain in the neck beauty!

Running really rough

Spark plugs, Ignition wiring, ignition coil, or high tension cord may be faulty. They must be inspected one by one and replaced if necessary.
