Question about Kia Sedona

1 Answer

Keys stay in the ignition switch and it seems it just doesnt recognize that it is in park. I can drive the car and move the shifter fine but when in park my keys will not come out and my battery will die due to the switch staying in the on position. 2004 Kia Sedona.

Gear shifter is in Park, but dash reads it's in Reverse. Car won't turn over because it is in Reverse now.

You have to locate where the park ignition switch is located. Some are on the transmission and some are in the column under the dash. It probably got moved.

Can't move shifter out of Park after starting engine on my 2000 Taurus. To drive the car, I have to stop the engine, turn the key back slightly, then switch to Neutral and restart the engine....

Hello, You are having problems with the Interlock controls. There is an Electric switch at the top of the Brake pedal lever that makes the car stay in Park UNTIL THE BRAKE PEDAL IS PRESSED. Because you are not in Alignment with the switches, you are using Neutral instead.

The most likely culprit is the switch I mentioned under the dash. Many people have broken it or knocked it off the holder. The second issue is the Alignment of the Ignition switch Interlock rod or cable. This part is raised or lowered by the Ignition switch and when you turn the Ignition switch, the rod moves. The part that the rod moves is an Interlock switch.

The Interlock switch can also free up your shifter. Also, if the Trigger on the shift for the console is not properly aligned, you will have similar release problems. It is another Interlock problem.

What would be the reason for the key not to come out of the ignition and the car not shift from park without pushing a button one the bottom of the shifter on a 97 grand prix

There may be a brake pedal switch sensor that determines when you have the brake applied. Normally if the pedal is down the pedal switch activates and removes a "lock" that would keep the shifter from moving.

Ordinarily when this happens you have to physically move the lock or replace or adjust the brake pedal switch to get the shifter to move freely.

If the car is not in "PARK" properly (the transmission can be in another gear even if the shifter "seems" to be in park - this would require an adjustment in the shift linkage) then the key won't turn to start.
Likewise until it is "properly" in park or neutral you may have difficulty locking the steering column and removing the key.

Ignition is stuck in run position

does your key stays in the ignition position? or can you turn it back to acc or lock? it might be a stuck ignition switch mechanism inside or a shorted circuit that latches the ignition...have it checked or you can try to open it the switch yourself..but with caution if this is your first time. Pls give me a feedback. thanks!

Is there a fee to ask ?

Now and then the gear shifter does not push up all the way to the park position locking up the ignition switch. Try moving the gear shifter up as far as you can to the park position and see if the key's will turn. Your ignition switch is a pass lock system ($$$$) and you don't want to be drilling that out unless you are will to replace it before you try to get the key's to work again. Keep me posted and let me know if that helped, if not i can give you the instructions to removing the ignition cylinder.

Key doesnt turn

dose your car have a key removal lock ? a lock you have to press befor you can remove the key ?
there is a shift over ride by your shifter. between/around the shifter and the radio (closer to the sifter) there is a small round plastic cover you can remove with a small flat head screw driver. remove this. you will a key or the screw driver and insert it into, what looks like a key hole for your car and turn/press (sorry for being vauge GMC's change year to year) this should allow you to move the shifter into park. make sure the car is off or at lest you have the E-brake on as well as your peddle brakes.
