Question about 1997 Dodge Intrepid

1 Answer

Why do the windows steam up when I turn on my heater/defrost. It only does it during the winter months and it does not smell like antifreeze. I had the system pressure checked and no leak downs were detected. We can go 100 miles without anything and all of a sudden we smell a stagnant water smell and the windows steam up so bad you can't see. What else could cause this?

    Thanks Mikemt,
I'm sorry I did have them check the drain tube and it was clear. We are all stumped and it is a really nice dependable car which I bought new and would just like to fix this issue.

Check to see if your drain tube is blocked for your ac unit-it may be backing up into the plenium and is being vaporized by the warm air blowing over it.

Antifreeze smell from vents

you probably have a leak in your heater core. the white smoke is steam from the hot antifreeze. alhough I am not a mechanic, this a fairly straight foward diagnosis. you need a mechanic soon, before your engine overheats & destroys itself. I hope this is not too late!

I have a 2000 4.3L silverado. Heater & AC works but when defrosters are turned, on my windows fog. Why???

Check coolant level, if it's losing coolant, you may have a heater core leak. Does it smell like antifreeze in vehicle when defroster on? If by chance your ducting drain is plugged, it may just be water or condensation build up inside where core is. Antifreeze leak will also put a sticky film on inside of windshield, so if you wipe it with finger and it feels sticky, it may be a core leak. Be sure to double check heater hose connections in to firewall/heater core, just to be sure your leak isn't a bad hose connection before going to far if core appears to be leaking. A pressure test on system may give you a better idea what's going on. If all checks out and no leak apparent, be sure your AC compressor is engaging when in defrost mode, as that is what helps remove the moisture in the air during defrost. If compressor is not engaging, it will take much longer to remove moisture in the cabin.

yOUR HEATER CORE NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. ANTIFREEZE CONTINUALLY RUNS THROUGH YOUR HEATER CORE WITH OR WITHOUT THE HEAT OR AC BEING ON. THIS ALLOWS YOUR ANTI-FREEZE TO COOL ABIT WHEN IT RETURNS TO THE BLOCK.

My van does not have heat. The floor on the passenger side is damp along the trim. I think its the heater core. How can I be sure?

The easy way to verify a bad heater core is by using the heater or defroster if the vehicle has antifreeze in it. If it only has water in it when the defrosters are on you will get a steam build up on the window like its getting fogged up. If antifreeze is in the system when the defroster or heater is on the air coming out will have an odor that smells sweet.
