If it will not hold a charge it must have a bad cell-Try to slow charge it (2 amp rate) if it will not fully charge at a slow rate it is done.

the only thing it could be is a bad battery cable or the new alternator is bad-what is the voltage at the battery when the car is running? It should be 14 volts, if it is lower, your problem is either the new alternator or the feed from the alternator to the battery. There is a post on the back of the alternator-it is positive and you should check there and at the battery to see, the readings should be virtually identical, if not, there is your issue. You can run a 4 gauge wire from this post to the positive post, and that should correct your problem assuming the alternator is good. Going through 3 batteries is not as hard as it sounds-A conventional battery can only come back from being 'killed' (completely discharged) a few times, while a deep cycle battery (like an Optima) can be fully drained hundreds of times and will recover.

They are more expensive, but are worth the investment if you don't drive your vehicle and it sits extended periods of time-is that the case for you?

Engine starts without warning with no key in the ignition

If the battery is not holding a charge, you need to address this problem first. The life expectancy of an automotive battery is 5yrs. For a battery to not hold a charge, there are numerous reasons. The battery may be bad, the charging system may not be working properly, or there is a draw on the system while the vehicle is not running. All this needs to be checked to isolate the problem with not holding a charge. If the engine starts without the key in the ignition by itself, you may have a starter relay sticking or wiring problem

Is the battery not holding a charge or is it being drained by something staying on? If not holding a charge then replace.....if something draining the battery look at interior lights or trunk/boot light!

I have take out my rx 8 battery to re charge it and when I replace it the engine won't turn over.

you either have'nt recharged as it isn't holding the charge ,or have it connected the wrong way round , which i doubt, have the battery tested for holding charge , if no good the get new battery and check the alternator charge rate as could be low and not charging battery

If my vehicle receices a jump start and it won't hold a charge , what is wrong with it ?

Depends.
If the alternator is charging, and the battery will not hold a charge, I would suspect the battery.
If the alternator is not charging the battery, I would look at the fuseable links and connections.

02 lincoln battery not holding charge

Hi and welcome to FixYa!

If the battery is not holding charge eventhough that the alternator is in good condition then the problem will be on the battery itself. If the battery is faulty or near it's break point it tends not to hold charge. I strongly suggest that you have it replaced.

Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!

Won't hold a charge

its the battery. the battery holds the charge and the alternator charges it so when you jump the car it stays running because you alternator is providing power when you shut the car off you have a bad battery that isnt holding the charge needed to start it again.
