Question about Hyundai Motor 2002 Sonata

When I take gas cap off all kinds of air comes rushing out and when I go too put fuel in it, it does not want to go in the tank,,,its acting like the tank if full and its not....any ideas?

With a new electric fuel pump you'd expect -obviously - fuel to spurt out at the carb end.

The fact that no fuel gets through or it's intermittent tends to suggest a problem with the fuel line itself. Is it rubber? It may have collapsed /perished internally.

You may have a blockage at the fuel pick up point within the tank itself. I think this is probably the most likely .. something 'drifting' around the bottom of the tank and acting like a shut off valve..

If your tank is developing a vacuum it will cause problems. There should be a vent from the tank to atmosphere - either a thin breather tube or a flap in the fuel cap. If the breather becomes blocked a vacuum is caused in the tank - it 'holds up' the fuel.

If you can hear air rushing into the tank when you remove the gas cap - you have a vacuum. try removing the cap to see if it makes any difference

Car acts like it runs out of gas


Hi: Try changing the fuel filter, Also check the gas tank vent, when it stalls loosen the gas cap and try to start it again it may not be lack of fuel but when you open the cap you are reliving the vacuum from the tank, after you close the cap the vacuum will build again.It can also be the gas cap if it is vented. Hi Cathy! It sounds like your car needs a good tuneup (new sparkplugs, sparkplug wires, distributor cap, fuel filter etc). The lack of power could be related to a bad fuel filter but could also be due to bad spark plugs, a crack in the distributor cap etc. A full tuneup will address all of these areas. Best of luck!

What size is the new line in comparison to the old one that went bad?? If the line is too narrow in diameter, it will not allow the air to rush out when you put fuel in it. The intention of that particular line is a 'breather' for the gas tank. Try a larger size line.

Fuel tank holds extremely hi pressure after changing out fuel pump on a 2000 silverado 5.3 engine.the more distance you drive the higher the pressure gets in tank.


You may be referring to the lowering of pressure in your fuel tank. As fuel is used, the pressure in the fuel tank drops to prevent vapours in the tank escaping to atmosphere. Ths is to comply with emission standards. The further you drive, the lower the pressure. When you remove the tank cap, air rushes in which makes you think it's coming out.

Two things come to mind. You broke the pressure seal to the fuel system when you took off the gas cap. The fresh gas rushing in disturbs any dirt or debris on the bottom of the tank.
Next time you use the car when you arrive at our destination, simulate what you do when you fuel up. This will mimic everythig except the new fuel rushing in. If it is still hard to start you know it's something to do with the evaporative fuel system. If not, you need the fuel tank inspected .

It sounds like a fuel problem as opposed to an electrical fault. Start with the easiest fixes first ..
The next time the car comes to a grinding halt quickly remove the petrol filler cap and listen for air rushing into the tank. If you can hear air rushing into the tank that means a vacuum has been created inside it.

There are 2 causes of a vacuum inside the petrol tank. One is that the air-valve in the filler cap is blocked (there's usually holes in the filler cap covered by a rubber type ring) and the other is that the breather tube from the tank to atmosphere becomes blocked with dirt and debris thrown up by the roadwheels. Try driving the car with the fuel cap removed or very loose so that air can easily enter the tank. If the car still comes to a halt with the same symptoms, then there isn't a vacuum being caused within the tank.

A failing fuel pump can cause the same problems. I once owned a VW that had the symptoms you describe. The in-tank fuel pump was 'on its last legs' and when replaced the car was perfect.

A blocked fuel filter can also cause the same problems.

Here in the UK the Volvo 960 is either a straight-six 2.5 litre or 3 litre engine. I would guess that Volvos in North America share a pretty much the same mechanical layout depsite model differences. A UK 960 has two fuel pumps. One is located within the fuel tank and is accessed via an inspection plate behind the rear passenger seats (estate/station wagon models). The other fuel pump sits in a bracket underneath the car alongside the fuel filter, just aft of the front passenger seat (driver seat in the US..).

My guess is that if you went to a workshop they would opt for changing the under-car mounted fuel pump. It may be cheaper to get a workshop to diagnose the problem first and then you can do the repairs/replacement.

try leaving gas cap loose on your next fill up and see if that helps. gas tanks need air and if gas cap vent is not letting air in the truck will acted like it is running out of gas

Engine runs bad at half tank or less


Ok ready for this one,new gas cap,its true cars with bad gas caps will cause the check engine light go on,or your problem,it has to be pressurized when full and no air in the tank its ok,but as you use gas and have air in the tank with the low fuel the air pressure is leaking pass the cap,thus losing pressure,too bad you had to fix all the other stuff but look at it as an investment,after this works please give me a fix ya thanks
