Question about 1999 Cadillac DeVille

1999 cadillac concours, ELC compressor does not work. I have checked out the compressor and supplied 12vdc to it and it runs. but the system does not turn it on. According to manual the concours does have a relay to control the compressor. What turns it on? Is there a code in the info center that will tell me the error, or that can be cleared?

i have not in my owners booklet a cb identified as elc compressor. where is it located?

  • ggebheim Jan 04, 2011

sorry for poor last statment. I was on the phone. I have looked in owner's manual for a fuse or cb related to compressor, but have not found one. How is cb named and where is it located?

  • ggebheim Jan 05, 2011

I have checked all related ELC and RSS fuses and relays that I can find. There is no fuse box behind the glove box. The MaxiFuses body 1 and 2 are good. I can't find the ELC circuit breaker that is referenced in the description of the MaxiFuse body 2. Where else could it be located? There is a ride control sensor on each side of the rear suspension. Which one controls ride height and how to test?

  • ggebheim Jan 07, 2011

both sensors show 0.0 ohms resistance, it does not change with sensor arm moved to up and down limits. the voltage at each sensor connector is 4.40.

  • ggebheim Jan 09, 2011

is there a relay that supplies power to the compressor? where is it located? the owner's manual refers to one, but does not give location.

  • ggebheim Jan 10, 2011

I checked the cb in the harness, it measures 0.00ohm, so its not open. there are 6 relays in the relay center, is one specific for the compressor, or are there multiple ones used?

  • ggebheim Jan 11, 2011

i checked all the relays by trying each of them in a location that turns on the interrior lights and all worked. if i knew which socket is for the compressor i could apply power there to see if compressor would run. perhaps there is no signal to the relay.

2 years ago i replaced the original shocks with arnott industry replacements. they have the airbag for load leveling, but not the ride control valving mechanisms. the ride sensing valve control heads (the part that fit into the factory shocks) are tied up under the chassis.

None of the three responses from the experts has helped resolve the problem. There is no ELC sensor. It appears ride height control is integrated into the ride control system RSS. There is a sensor on each wheel that I believe is an accelerometer to measure the rate of change wheel movement up and down. With that info the valving in the shock is adjusted to control the ride stiffness. This provides the feature of minimizing the wheel drop into potholes. To acheive ride height the system must compare the 2 sensors to determine ride height and adjust it via the compressor and exhaust valve as required. I believe the RSS computer is not functioning properly. Several years ago I replaced the OEM shocks with Arnott industries shocks. That took away ride control; but elc should have continued. Unfuntunately I never drove the car much and never knew if ride height was working. Recently I've started driving the car and elc is not working. Between 1996 and 2006 I was QC manager for company that built almost 1 million exhaust valves a year for gm. I have an extra compressor and exhaust valve that I have swapped in and out and tested so I know the compressor works. The system does not turn it on. I don't believe I ever accepted any of the solutions presented, yet my reward was accepted by someone. The $10 is not the issuse, its about fixing the problem, isn't it?

  • ggebheim Jan 20, 2011

when i first started, on the web page there was a block "do you accept this solution" That is what I was referring to. That block no longer appears so I thought someone decided the solutions were 'accepted'. My wife wants me to stop working on the car and just sell it.

Check the "RIDE HEIGHT SENSOR".The E.L.S. FUSE is located in trunk. The ELC Compressor Relay is in the trunk compartment #2 micro relay center. The position sensors are mounted on the body above the upper control arms of the rear axle. Each side has a link to an upper control arm. The CVRSS control module supplies 8 volts to the position sensors. There are many relays there.Out of that the relay for compressor is "Relay A" in the relay center, which should be next to the fuse block where the ELS fuse is. ------------ If you want to know how this ELS System functions. Please click on the link below:---- http://technoanswers.blogspot.com/2011/01/1999-cadillac-elc-system-working.html ------------------- This will help.Thanks.Helpmech.

The ELC system that it is NOT intended to permanently hold a large percentage of the rear weight of the car. In other words, if the car doesn't sit level without it, you REALLY have a problem with the springs being weak.
    -------------------------
First thing to do is check the fuses and then check under the car on the rear suspension to see if the level sensor link is connected properly. The sensor is mounted to the body, and there's a link from it to the suspension control are which allows the sensor to monitor the height of the body relative to the suspension. It's actually very common to have the link break or become disconnected from the control arm. Next, step up on the back of the car to simulate a load, and listen for the compressor to come on, may take up to 15-20 seconds due to a programmed in timer. If the compressor comes on but the car does not rise, look for an air leak in the tubing between the compressor and shocks, or leaking bladder at the shock itself. If the compressor does not come on, troubleshoot the sensor and compressor.
    ---------------
The level control has nothing to do with the wire looms you see up top. All that goes to the shocks for the level control are some very small air tubes (one to each rear shock) that will only be visible from underneath the car. There will be a small arm and sensor attached to the rear A-arm of the car to measure height and tell the compressor whether to add air or exhaust air out. Check this sensors also.----------------- This should help.Thanks.Helpmech.

Hi.

There is an ELC relay and an ELC circuit breaker that must be checked. The relay is in the Rear Compartment Relay Center 2, locatedbehind the rear seat in passenger compartment.

The relay center 2 is represented as number five in diagram below.

The breaker is in the Automatic Level Control Fuse Block , indicated as nr 12 in picture below. Click on the picture to enlarge.

    Hi.

The compressor motor being defective is highly unlikely, if the relay are not getting power, the problem is not the compressor. Ensure that you have checked the breaker/fuse in : 12 Automatic Level Control Fuse Block (in the Harness). That will deliver power to the relay, and it is commonly causing the problem.

Hoiw to replace the air ride suspension comporessor on a 96 cadillac concours

Loosen exhaust system at each end of muffler and remove muffler heat shield to get at compressor assembly. Disconnect air lines and electrical wiring, remove inlet filter from underbody mounting, two bracket screws attaching compressor mounting bracket to suspension, and then remove compressor and bracket assembly toward the rear of the car next to exhaust pipe.

Can't find the relay for the electronic level control(elc) for a 1999 cadillac eldorado

1. Locate the automatic level control height sensor under the rear of the vehicle on the rear suspension support. If the back of the car is too low and will not pump up, ground pin B Yellow wire and see if the compressor will come on and the car will raise.

2. If the car does raise when pin B is grounded, check the powers and grounds to the height sensor.
3. If the powers and grounds are OK and the pump does come on and the car raises when pin B is grounded, the height sensor will need to be replaced.

4. If the car is too high and will not come down, ground pin E White wire at the height sensor to see if the car will lower.

5. If the car lowers when the White wire in pin E is grounded, check the powers and grounds to the height sensor.

6. If powers and grounds are OK and the car does lower when pin E is grounded, the height sensor will need to be replaced. Tech Tips: There are two different automatic level control systems for this car; one is without RPO F45 and one is with RPO F45. The system without F45 has an automatic level control height sensor and with F45 the automatic level control compressor is controlled by the continuously variable road sensing suspension module. Tests/Procedures: 1. Using a head lamp as a load, test the ELC height sensor power/grounds.

2. The power feeds are: Orange wire, pin C and a Brown wire, pin D.

3. The ground is pin A, Black wire.

4. Ground the White wire at the height sensor, check that the vent solenoid in the ELC compressor clicks and vents the air from the system. Author: Bill Siegmann

???????? ? ???????? ??????? 1995?. ????????? ???? ?????? S036 service ride control, ??? ??? ??????, ??? ?????????

Hello: S036 concerns the road sensing suspension, in this code it tells us the electronic level control (ELC) compressor relay has a short to ground or an open circuit. Fuses to this system (2) one 10 amp in the engine compartment. The other fuse is a 30amp located in the trunk compartment. There is also a relay in the trunk compartment relay center, #2mirco relay center ELC relay "A". I hope this helps you.

My cadillac concours deville say low refrigerant ac compressor off and tried to put some in is there a certain way to do it

Yes, if it is like my 1990 cadillac deville, you must first disconnect the battery for 3 or so minutes and reconnect it to clear the error message and to reset the a/c system so it will turn on when R134a is added under pressure.

Cadillac did that in 1990 so the compressor would not run without refrigerant in the system. It's a safety feature designed to save a compressor if there is a leak in the system.

If you try to add refrigerant without resetting the a/c system, then the compressor will not engage.

Why is my cadillac rear so low

You may have a leak in the rear air bags or the compressor for the air bags is not working, listen when you turn on the key to see if you can hear the compressor run ,if you do then likely the bags,if not then likely the compressor.
