It's preferable not too since your gas tank has only half the support it should have. you tank can fall in the middle of the street or highway and cause accidents. I suggest you change both quickly

As mush as gas cost now I would get it fixed. Don't want to drag it down the road. Go to a salvage yard to save money.

My gas gauge doesn't always work, and jumps back and forth. is this a simple fix?

Check your battery connections for tightness or possibly corrosion. Also, if you didn't hook the negative cable directly to the battery or engine block, you could have fried the negative (ground) wire to the body of your vehicle which would cause all kinds of weird problems with accessories. Check this connection to the body, also. (It's usually a short black wire from the negative side of the battery bolted to the body metal.)

Gas smell but not any leaks

Depending on the Year of Expedition there was a recall for Gas tank straps. Those units having shields for the Off-road package kept the gas tanks from falling off the vehicle. For units without the shields, the tank could hang from the remaining strap which would put all the pressure on the remaining strap.
The repair for the strap is free under Warranty.
There are other parts which may fail. The main line to the fuel pump can rust. Any metal component up to the fuel injectors can likewise fail.
There is also a system for the Emissions and the vapors can leak if the hoses have pin holes. A device called a "smoke test machine" is needed to detect these leaks. This is a possibility since you see no fuel puddles under your vehicle.
A tiny fuel leak can seep and evaporate while the vehicle is in motion.
I would call in the vehicle VIN# and see if your particular unit has been recalled for the straps. An inspection under the vehicle would be useful. After that, do a "smoke test".

This is located on the top/side of the gas tank on the drivers side of the tank. instructions for removal- jack the front left side of the car up, unbolt top bolt that holds the heat shield and evap canister up place another jack under gas tank before the strap. (i use the jack that comes with the car i find it easier) unbolt 1st strap lower the tank down there should be enough clearance to lower half of the tank down without droping the entire thing

The fuel pump is going bad on my 1996 olds ninety eight. What I need to know is how long it will take my remove the take and the correct procedure to remove the tank.

make sure you have as little gas in the tank as possible, unplug tank , usually up near top or tank if possible , unhook gas fill tube from fuel door area , (screws usually inside fuel door), unhook fuel lines from tank closest to the tank as possible, place jack under fuel tank and slightly tighten to tank, release tank straps and lower jack, roll out free from under vehicle and remove pump from tank, reverse process to reassemble.

REPLACING FUEL TANK STRAPS

I know it can be a bear if the bolts and pins are rusted. Unless the new straps are OEM, some after market straps don't fit quite as well and you need Godzilla strength to manover them into place to get them pinned and bolted back up.
You shouldn't have to drop the tank as long as you do the straps one at a time. Get a floor jack, transmission jack or even a motorcycle jack and place wood under the gas tank and do one strap at a time. I used a second jack to help push the strap in place so I could push it into place on a 97 Dakota. Good luck and sometimes it goes smooth but, some times it makes a preacher say things they wouldn't say in church. :)

How do i change a fuel filter and drain the gas tank on 1996 7.4 liter

the gas filter is located under the truck on the frame rail (driver`s side) You need a 5/8 line wrench for the gas lines, along with a 13/16 or 21mm wrench for the gas filter. Hold either wrench and turn counter clock-wise. You may have to soak the filter and lines with penatrating oil to loosen it up. Make sure you where saftey glasses and don`t even think about smoking..
As for draining the tank, that is more difficult-you will have to drop the gas tank and tank support straps. Not something you want to do at home.A lift hoist will be more safer and the proper way of removing the gas tank. If you are draining the gas because it`s old, I would just run it through with fresh gas added. this will save you fustration..Or to drop the tank-go see your repair shop for this service. Remember gas is very dangerous and expensive too, if you don`t know what your doing.-leave it to us pro`s to do the job right the first time. I guarantee the lines , straps, and filter will be very rusted, and will give the mechanic some difficulty preforming this repair due to the age of your truck...

Need to replace fuel pump on 91 lumina

Pump is in fuel tank. It is a miserable job, do not attempt unless you are experienced at frustration. The fuel lines will likely be seized as well as the tank straps. Also the sending unit will be rusted together and will have to be replaced, the tank likely will be rusted under straps and will be no good to reinstall.

How do i remove the gas tank from my 1999 chevrolet trail blazer

Depending on how rusted your Blazer is. You either remove the bolts from the straps or cut the straps off and replace both. Get a 2x4 and place of lift jack. The tanks should be about empty or a pain to lift. Lift the jack up to take some of the weight off the tank. Try to unbolt straps. If no luck. Get out a hand power grinder. Start cutting. That's about the only way I know. We removed my son's fuel tank off a 1988 GMC pickup last Sunday. Everything was rusted BAD The straps had to be cut. We didn't have any replacements. So we used 3 ATV orange racket straps. Worked fine so far.

Gas tank straps rusted & broke and need to replace. How do you get to the mounting brackets?

Strap mounts are right at the strap ends why can't you find them?
I use chimney strapping (get from most hardware stores) to make new ones. Paint them with undercoating spray to keep from rusting out.

2 of my fuel tank straps fell off and are dragging

yes it's a relatively easy fix.
First you'll need to remove the broken straps then put the tank back in place and support it with some jack stands(check the wires and fuel lines before you put the tank in place) Now start the car and check for leaks. If it won't start make sure the tank level and that it has fuel in it. If that's ok then you'll need to do some more checking with the wiring for the fuel pump. Now you will want to install the new straps and remove your jack stands.
Hope this helps!
