Question about Jeep Grand Cherokee

1 Answer

I have a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee Sport 2WD that I am having some problems with. It first started with the overdrive kicking off and the trans not shifting properly. When taken to my normal mechanic the check engine light code was the torque converter solenoid. We have since replaced the sensor trans fluid and filter. There were no signs os trans damage when changed. Fluid was clean and not burnt and filter was clean as well. Had the light reset and now the overdirve hs turned off again and the trans won't leave 3rd gear. I have been told its a fail safe and that it starts in 3rd and stays in 3rd and there is an electrical problem. I don't know where to start now and I don't have alot of money to keep looking for a needle in a haystack. I hope you have a solution for me! THanks C. Gabard

Drain fluid into a clean plastic bowl, check for brass cuttings or metal shavings in sunlight. If present get complete trans overhaul.

sounds like a possible shift solenoid. If it's due for a fluid change, do that and add a container of lucas trans conditioner. Likely you have a drain plug on the pan so if the fluid was recently serviced, just drain a quart out and replace with the additive, then top off.
If the condition does not change within a week, likely you will need better diagnosis from a reputable trans shop.

Is the overdrive solenoid on a 95 JGC accessible, externally?

no. its part of the valve body inside of the transmission. you would need to drain and remove the transmission oil pan and then remove the valve body. Best left to a transmission shop or reputable repair center.

Had the same code on my 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Started having shifting problems as well. Code is for governor pressure sensor on trans. Cost me about $800 for dealer to fix. No problems after part changed out.

Do you have reverse lights? If not the wires go to the neutral safety switch. You may need to re-wire it to restore operation The haynes manual has a good plug diagram.
