Question about 2000 Mazda Protege

2000 mazda protege overheats and shows signs of rust at radiator site because water is used instead of antifreeze. How can I flush system and replace with antifreeze ?

Coolant is brown


brow and muddy color usually is a sign of not using enough antifreeze to protect system from rust.
drain the radiator and completely flush the system. use a quality flush system from the auto parts store. after system is flushed so it only flows clean water after draining a few times then empty system and refill with 50/50 antifreeze /water and make sure system is cycled through 5-6 time to make sure air is purged from the system

check or replace the thermostat then check for radiator leaks and sludge in radiator flush out radiator and all water in engine replace with fresh water and anti rust stuff check all hoses connected to radiator and the heater for leaks

flush system, replace radiator. use a compatible antifreeze coolant mixture. Splash out and use demineralised (battery top up water will do) water to keep the system cleaner

Have a 2000 honda civic and it overheats on idle. I JUST REPLACED THE RADIATOR,AND THE WATER PUMP ALSO REPLACED THE THERMOSTAT. so how could i fix this?


Make sure the electric radiator fan is going on at appropriate temperatures to cool the coolant down in the radiator. Make sure it's connected up and so on and so forth. Sometimes, sediment builds up in the coolant passages, causing the overheating to occur. Consider having it flushed out and replaced the coolant with a 50/50 mixture of antifreeze to water. If pure antifreeze was used, instead of a 50/50 mixture, it can cause an overheat condition to occur as well.

Replaced Water pump, thermostat and radiator, car overheats in 15 minutes????? What could it be?


Sounds like it could be compression gases coming out to the cooling system. If You have been using just water in your radiator, instead of a good quality antifreeze with good anti-rust agents this could be a good clue. It could be caused by a leaking head gasket or head. The right fix is to do the appropriate repair. The cheap fix is to apply an do-it-your-self treatment from any auto parts store to stop this leak. These treatments sometimes will clog your heater core if it is already a little dirty and not heating as it should. Carlos C.

CHECK COOLANT.IF COOLANT TOO LOW IT WILL CAUSE OVERHEATING.IF COOLANT LEVEL IS GOOD.YOUR THERMOSTAT IS STICKING CLOSED.IF ALL IS WELL.YOUR RADIATOR IS CLOGGED UP NEED FLUSHING.ENGINE BLOCK WATER PASSAGES IS STOPPED UP.LEAKING HEAD GASKET WILL CAUSE OVERHEATING. USE A SCANNER TO CHECK TO MAKE SURE COOLANT FAN IS WORKING.AND COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR IS WORKING.COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR IS WHAT CAUSES THE COOLANT FAN TO TURN ON AT 190 TO 200 DEGREES.IF COOLANT FAN NOT WORKING.HOT WIRE IT USING JUMPER WIRE TO BATTERY. IF FAN RUNS YOU HAVE A BAD FUSE OR RELAY.IF NOT FAN MOTOR IS FAULTY.REPLACE IT.ALSO CHECK WATER PUMP IF YOU SEE SIGNS OF ANTIFREEZE LEAKING AROUND WATER PUMP.REPLACE IT.ALSO MAKE SURE YOU HAVE 50 % WATER AND 50 % ANTIFREEZE. My 2000 old 3.5 l intrigue overheats at 1500 rpms and below. I have changed throttle body gasket, thermostat and water pump and it still is overheating. Where do I go next.


The orange antifreeze that is used is know to gel up and after a few years when the mixture is no longer 50/50, the antifreeze will crystallize and plug up water journals and jackets. The orange antifreeze has a life of 5 years or 150,000 miles and any longer will have the cooling system plugged up with crystals. Best thing to do is to flush out the cooling system with Preston coolant flush, use the dry powder to flush the system out and follow the instructions, then replace the coolant with 50/50 (water/antifreeze) mix. If your not sure how to mix, you can buy them premixed. This should help keep your cooling system 100%, keep me posted. Be glad to help get your car running 100% and you could also replace the temperature sensor, it's located at the manifold just in front of the thermostat housing. The tip of the sensor may have crystal formation, giving it a false reading.

RADIATOR IS RUSTED!


a radiator flush chemical may be a bad idea if the radiator is rusted up inside.drain out as much as you can, fill with distilled water only, then idle the car till it is at full operating temp. then drain the water and do the same thing one more time. after that, fill with your 50-50 mix of antifreeze/water and that will be about as clean as you can safely get it.

Loosing antifreeze


First, make sure you have the proper mix of antifreeze/water (50/50)
otherwise using the a/c will cause a boil-over, even if the system is OK. Second, be sure that the electric fan comes on when the vehicle goes to operating temp (about 210degrees (f). Otherwise, system will push coolant out of the system while driving and result in overheat at idle. Fan should be on every time a/c is on as well. If temperature is normal while on the highway, then the thermostat is good. Look for debris (leaves etc) stuck between the radiator and a/c condenser. That will restrict air flow at idle and can cause problems.An internal buildup inside the radiator will do this as well. If minor, then over the counter flushes may help. Problem is that sometimes the coolant/flush mixture will go around the blockage instead of removing it. Jeep radiators are very small...any blockage makes them "marginal" at best.Last, but very important is to carefully check everything over to make sure that there are no leaks or seepage in the system. Under pressure, what appears to be nothing, can amount to a substantial loss of coolant.
This sounds long and comples, but takes longer to write or read than it usually does to make these checks. If you need help with anything you find, just ask!!
