Question about Jeep Cherokee

2 Answers

My 1996 jeep sporadically will not start. It starts after sitting overnight in the garage. I drive 1/2 mile to gas station, fill it up, then it won't start. I am getting lights on the dash, but that is it. AAA has checked the battery and alternator. The starter has been replaced, we thought that was the issue. The dealership offered to replace a part in the transmission, it was a $344 part and would cost $650 to replace, but they could not guarantee that was the problem. I had Autozone re-check the battery since it was theirs. We also played with a "plug" labeled "Starter" in the fuse box. I wanted Autozone to look at it and I wanted to purchase another, figuring it was a cheep $10 part. The girl pulled out the plug, eyeballed it, said it was ok, and that was that. The vehicle has 140,000 miles on it and I want/need it to last another 6 years (60,000 miles) at least. HELP!

Well the peice that i am assumeing they said about on the tranny is the nutral safty switch, to check that i think that if you put it in neutral it will start. it may also be your computer it is on the drivers side up behind the dash beside the console. it is silver you should be able to have it checked at autozone or advanced auto

Think you need a crank position sensor. They can act up. Its bolted to the drivers side top of the transmission bell housing. 2 bolts and a connector to change (dont drop the bolts in the bell housing).Easier to see from bottom looking up.

1998 Oldsmobile Silhouette overheating

Is it leaking antifreeze underneath the engine at all when it sits overnight? If so I would say the water pump is shot. If it isn't leaking, it could still be the water pump but it might(hopefully) just need a new thermostat. And driving it when it's hot like that to the point where it starts to run rough means you run it too much like that and your engine will blow up and there is probably already damage. So check it out before driving it to much more.

I have a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4x4 with the 4.0L. It has approximately 150k miles on it. I started the Jeep with 1/4 tank of fuel in it and it started rough and acted like it was going to die....

long post.
ill reduce it for you.
misfires. (is RPM below 700 then misfire can be normal) for idle speed controls dead.
ISC the isc controls speed, of idle,.
mine stuck like zillion times, in 400k miles. endless.sticking
mine was a tiny gutless stepper motor drive ISC valve.
the cone valve is side gets nasty and sticks (
(PCV gases caused as seen on all engines)
i clean it.
the proof is the easy press of right foot easy raises idle back to 700rpm and engine stops misfiring.
ever get a tuneup this decade or running spark parts 500,0000 miles
for the new world record.?

now the tricky part of ISC, , fully explained in the SM serv. man.
the PCM learns its behaviors.
it learns all hot start settings and cold
so when you key on, it goes to the correct HISTORICAL spot.
if it can move there(sticks) engine car race.
or run too slow,
cold start would be worse, as hot isc is more closed
so if sticks there closed, the next cold start will be horrid
some newer manuals telly you to add 5% throttle if car is hard starting this is so common.

clean it. end story.
ISC

Change your fuel filter, it may have gone it's life time and is getting to dirty to let fuel flow properly. Your fuel pump to may be getting weak, if the fuel filter is dirty the pump works harder and heats up and could be over heating the fuel pump relay too. The fuel pump relay i believe is in the glove box behind a panel that say relay, there should be (3) in there and the middle one is the fuel pump's. switch then around after you change the fuel filter and if you get a chance, check your fuel pressure at the shredder valve. Good luck and hope this help's if there is a Auto Zone around you, you can ask to use the fuel pressure gauge to see what fuel pressure you have and they'll have the step by step instructions on how to do it and takes about 5 min to do and will have the fuel filter and step by step to replace that too. Keep me posted, be glad to help.

96 jeep cherokee, replace cps and the engine control fuse

The guy at the garage today, said he went out and put a fuse in it and it started right up. Thats all he did for now. I going to have a closer look on the weekend. But, as before when I went 1/2 mile it would burn the fuse again. We will have to see if it does again, I espect it will. Any idea?

Lite poped on for gas filled it and now wont stay going

You got a tank of bad gas. You need to drain the tank and refill with good gas. If that doesn't resolve issue you need to check fuel pressure to see if the fuel pump gave up on you.

Did you know Jeep did a recall and paid for replacement of catalytic converters on 1996 models (don't know about any others) - they reimbursed me for work done, up to a point - hope this helps!
