Question about Pontiac Grand Am

1 Answer

I've had the same remote starter in my car for about 4 years (2002 Grand Am) and every now and then when I press and hold II for 2 seconds it will try to start a few times (without turning over the engine) but ultimately fails. I've noticed this happens after a head light is changed or sometimes with an oil change and have now learned that I should have been setting the remote starter to Valet mode before I even pop the hood. I have taken my car back to the place that installed the remote starter a few different times and they are always able to fix it by doing something with the wires under the steering wheel area. Also, I've had my battery replaced in my car which some how seemed to fix the issue as the remote start worked again. I'm wondering if there is a simpler way to get the start function working again without taking it back to the place that installed it since it seems like such an easy task and could be a connection reset or something. All of the other functions on the remote work perfectly.

Hello mlee.

What brand of remote starter is this?
It seems like your problem may be the under hood kill switch may be staying grounded.
Make sure that the hood when closed is depressing the hood pin down enough to open the circuit.
Try this. Go to your car and hit the start button, if on the first attempt it does not start push down on the hood in the area of the hood pin before it tries the second time. If it then starts the switch needs to be adjusted.
Give that a try.

I am not familiar with that brand. There are many different types on the market today.
However, most operate in a similar manner.
Many brands have a safety switch installed under the hood to prevent engine starts while working in the engine bay. If this switch isn't depressed far enough it will not allow an engine to crank. It will make the park lamps come on.
Most are mounted on a fender or rad support and are pushed down by the hood.
The top of them are usually about the diameter of a pencil and are pushed up by a spring inside them.
Have a look and see if it is equipped.
If your remote starter does not have this feature my advise to you so far is not going to help.

Gather all of the fob remote car starters for your car, unless you only have one. Insert your key into the ignition turn it to the "On" position --- right before actually starting the car, the lights should turn on. Press and hold the "Lock" button on your fob remote car starter for one second. Turn your key to the "Off" position --- the car lights should turn off. Do this within five seconds of turning the key to the "On" position and don't remove the key once you've turned it to the "Off"...

Remote keyless programming

This procedure clears the transmitter codes and creates new ones, so you must program all remotes at the same time, even if one or more is already working.

Enter the car, and close all doors.

Each of the following steps must be completed within five seconds of completing the previous step. If you take longer or make a mistake, start the entire procedure over again.

Insert the key into the ignition, and hold one remote in your left hand. Whenever the instructions say to press the LOCK button, you should press the lock button on the remote for about a second and then release it.

Perform each of the following three steps in order, then repeat all three steps two more times, for a total of three times each:

1. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position, marked II.
2. Press the LOCK button.
3. Turn the ignition switch to the Off position, marked I.

Do this three times!

Next, turn the ignition switch to the ON position (II) for a fourth time.

Press the LOCK button again. The door locks should now make a cycling sound, indicating that the system has entered Programming Mode.

Press the LOCK button one more time to program this remote. If you have other remotes to program, press the LOCK button on each one in turn. The door locks should make the cycling sound after you press LOCK on each remote. You may program up to three remotes, and they must all be programmed within ten seconds of each other.

Turn the ignition off and remove the key. The remotes are now programmed and may be tested.

If you've got a trunk/hatch release, hold the button for this function for a few seconds.

Directly from the owners manual...
1.- Enter your car wth your ignition key and your theft remote, and press the Lock button on your remote five times in 10 seconds.
2.- Insert your key into the Jeep's ignition cylinder, and then turn the key to the "Run" position. Wait for the car's automatic chiming sound to stop before proceeding.
3.- Press and hold the Unlock button on your remote for around five seconds, and then press and hold the Panic button at the same time.
4.- Hold both buttons together for one second and then release. Wait for the car's chimes to sound again and then press and release the Lock and Unlock buttons on your remote.
5.- Press and release just the Unlock button on the remote next and wait for a chime again to indicate successful programming. You can then remove your ignition key to complete the resetting process.

Need remote programming 2002 dodge neon

If you have a working remote the programming is as follows:
1. Turn the ignition switch to the 'run' position.
2. With the remote that works, press the UNLOCK button for 4 to 10 seconds.
3. Within that 4 to 10 second period, keep holding the UNLOCK button, and press the PANIC button for one second. Release both buttons. You will hear a chime, this means that the car is in remote programming mode.
4. Within 30 seconds of hearing the first chime, press any button on ALL remotes to be programmed (including the working remote). You will hear a chime after each remote is programmed.
5. Turn the ignition key to OFF.
6. Test all of the remotes.

If you don't have a working remote, you will need to go to a dealership to have them program one for you.

Keyless remote

Note:
Entering the programming mode cancels all learned keyless remotes, so
none of the previously programmed remotes will work. You must reprogram
all of the keyless remotes once you are in the programming mode. You must complete each step within 4 seconds of the previous step to keep
the system from exiting the programming mode. You must program remotes
within 10 seconds of each other

1. Turn ignition switch to ON (II)
2. Within 4 seconds press the LOCK or UNOCK button on one of the remotes.
(An unprogrammed remote can be used for this step.)

3. Within 4 seconds turn ignition switch to LOCK (0) position
4. Within 4 seconds turn the ignition switch to ON (II)
5. Repeat steps 2, 3 and 4 two more times using the same keyless remote
used in step 2

6. Within 4 seconds press the LOCK or UNLOCK button on the same remote.
Make sure the power door locks cycle to confirm you are in programming
mode.

7. Within 10 seconds press the LOCK or UNLOCK button on same remote.

8. Within 10 seconds press the LOCK or UNLOCK button on all other
remotes you want to program. Make sure door locks cycle after you push
each remote button to confirm system has accepted the remote.

9. Turn the igniton switch to LOCK (0) to exit programming mode.
10. Test remote(s)
