ON A 2001 YUKON SLT, I JUST CHANGED THE ALTENATOR AND CAN'T GET THE BELT BACK ON, IT'S TO TIGHT! WHAT DO I LOOSEN TO GET THE BELT BACK ON RIGHT?

Is the pulley on the new alternator the same size as the old one? I assume, since you got the old unit off, that you know that you have to hold the idler pulley against its spring to get enough slack to get the belt back on, and that you have routed the belt properly- if that's the case then pulley size or alternator case size is about the only thing that can be different now.

There is a tensioner pulley that has a nut in the middle of it, loosen that nut and there is a tensioner bolt that when you loosen it, it slides the pulley away from the belt to replace it.

Serpentine Belt

Hi triple b,

The tensioner is loosened with a slow application of force. No prybar necessary.
  • Get a 14mm or 9/16" socket and a long handled ratchet or breaker bar.
  • Get the belt around all the pulleys except the A/C compressor or Alternator.
  • The tensioner pulley is on a spring loaded arm. Get your socket on the center nut of this pulley.
  • Slowly pull the ratchet toward the center of the engine. The pulley will pivot on the arm allowing you to get the belt on the final pulley.
  • Slowly release the tension.
  • You're done
