Being this is an older car it could also be your ignition switch. I would start there as this sounds exactly like an ignition switch. If when it doesn't start you hear nothing, no clicks, starter trying to start etc, I would replace the ignition switch. It's not expensive and if you talk to the guys at the parts store they can give you a good idea how to do it. They will likely even let you look at a Hayes book in the store to see how it's done. It's really very simple.

Try Aftermarket starters make a lot of connections to the original wiring and it is unwise to remove it without knowing which wires in the original harness were affected.

Startin problems

The starter will have to be replaced. Go to a salvage yard and buy one for half the cost of regular price. Plus it may be an original equipment starter, the original factory starter on the car. It's better quality than a lot of aftermarket parts you get across the counter.

During the time of the original there was a short cuircit in the electrical system, The short caused the ECU to be damaged. THe ECU controls all the componets you described (plus many many more). I am quite shocked that the vehicle has maintained any functionality at all, by my reckoning the vehicle should not start at all.

Check the connection at the starter relay. The battery cable should run to the relay and another runs from the starter relay to the starter. If the connection seems fine, the relay itself may have a crack within., preventing a starting connection. If this isn't the problem, the starter solenoid may be getting to hot and not engaging the starter bendix.

Chirp when starting

You probably have the same issue as many Sentra owners- bleed off of fuel pressure. This would cause a hard starting condition when the vehicle sits overnight. See TSB# NTB05-052a for the procedure. This is a dealer-only repair (parts are not available aftermarket).

As for the squeal, I've seen a LOT of this- the belts on these vehicles are less than excellent quality. The belts might look fine and some mechanics will say that they don't need to be replaced, but they are noisy and they can't be quieted up even by overtensioning them. Replacement is the only repair. Aftermarket belts can also be very noisy, so I would suggest Original Equipment (Nissan) belts.

Hope this is helpful!!!

Do you have a remote starter installed in this vehicle? If so, you body computer is probably compromised. Aftermarket remote starters kills the body ECU with unfortunate regulararity.
