Question about GMC C3500

Open Question

I just did a coolant change on a 3208 and the sleeves between the heads and the front covers are leaking,I'm wondering how to approach this ,weather it would be better to remove the heads or to remove the front cover ,this is on a standby generator.Disregard the make and model

SOURCE: Leaks oil looks like from valve cover

You have to remove the spark plugs cables and remove the four nuts that you see when the cables are removed.

When the four nuts are removed, simply raise the valuve cover. When replacing the gasket, make sure you get the gromets as well. Those sometimes get worn or crack since they are more exposed than the value cover gasket. Make sure that you clean the cover from oil and replace the gasket with no use of silicon.

There should either be a little button at the base of the headrest that you push, or a small hole in the rod part, with a hole in it. Push in the hole with a pen, or a small nail to release the headrest.

i'm guessing that your car has approx 130k or more miles on it. these engines are cousin of the old 2.8L V-6, and have a tendency that if you don't constantly monitor you coolant level, or the engine is abused, (hot rodded), that it will crack a block, take it from me, after approx 130k i got a cracked outer water jacket, but it ran perfectly fine and i drove it for another 20k, but got tired of having to add water to the radiator everyday, so i purchased a new engine, put another 150k on it, and now have a blown head gasket..i'm not one to try any type of block sealers as most of them contain solids, (sodium silcates or liquid glass), and it"ll clog up your radiator, and possibly your hearter core,..but my car has 297000miles on it, so what the heck, what do i got to lose..so i purchased a bottle of "Blue Devil" $65 ( supposedly doesnt contain any solids), at Kragen autostore, they didnt stock it on the shelf, they had to go into the back room to find it. Well they told me that you have to follow instructions to the letter, and i thought how hard can it be, but you are supposed to shake it before pouring it in which i had over looked and when i took out the thermostat, i didnt have the rubber seal in properly and lost most of this when i saw it leaking out onto the ground, so i shut it off and just reinstalled the stat real quick and started it back up...i let it idle the full 50 minutes like it said and the vapor stopped coming out and the low coolant light stopped coming on..but when it came time to test drive it i only got 10 miles before the low coolant light came on...so i kept losing about a half pint of coolant and had a slight misfire until the plug burnt of the water. So i still had half a bottle left, and did it again, this time with the heater on full blast like the instructions say to do.. and now im not topping off the radiator anymore and the engine oil is finally starting to go down...now i just got to change the oil out before i spin a bearing...because water isn't a good lubricant!
Check your oil cap or dip stick, if it doesnt look milkly, then you probably only have an external leak. the verdict on Blue Devil is still out, only 150 miles so far without having to add water! and i totally screwed up and didnt follow instuctions. i myself wanted to purchae another "crate" engine like i did back in 97 but they dont stock the 2.8L anymore. if you are going to spend big bucks to get this problem repaired and its a high mileage vehilce, i would ask if they carry replacement engines, not a rebuilt, but a brand new long block crate engine...back in 97 it cost me $1500 for the engine and $800 labor. ran good as new! and i squeezed another 13 years out of it...it sure beats new car payments. be careful of shady mechs when you go into repair timming cover coolant leaks because i pulled a little tab off the gasket so i would have proof that they did the work and not try and pour in any type of block sealer and the guy got real upset when i did that, well i didnt want him working on the car so i just took it to a dealer.

sounds like the injector sleeve O rings have failed this was common.
if you put a clear plastic piece of hose on supply line for diesel fuel filter to head fitting at front and fuel is not black but normal diesel colour thats good.
then put clear hose on return line fitting at rear of cylinder head and fuel is now darker, engine oil is by passing injector sleeve top O rings and entering into fuel gallery in head.
rocker cover, injector rail, injectors need removing and injector sleeves need replacing as well as O rings and seats.
a special tool is needed to remove the injector sleeves out of the head. you will also need to drain the cooling system before removing the injector sleeves, so coolant is also needed.
dealers have special tool for injector sleeves

Coolant in oil


Some place the coolant flows is through an area with oil in it, and the 2 mix, this indicates the gasket is defective or the part is cracked or otherwise not sealing. Cylinder head gaskets can cause this and often do.

Water in oil


That stinks... Those engine are more involved. The coolant can leak from three different areas. The head gasket, the cylinder sleeves, and the front timing cover. If you drain the oil pan, drop down the rack and pinion unit and remove the oil pan. You can try pressure testing the coolant and see where the coolant is dripping from. Food for thought. These engines are known for valve issues in the head after 250K miles. The repair alone can be $3K or more. If I can be of anymore help , let me know.

My 95 3.4 camaro is also leaking water. I see it coming out by the oilpan and the torque converter cover hole. It only runs for a bit and the dies. Please help


Are you in the North Eastern part of the US?
Is the engine clock in over 160,000+ miles?

The coolant leak is from the freeze plug(s) and / or head gasket.

The function of the freeze plug is protecting the engine block from cracking in extreme cold temperature. (below freezing point of coolant // -34F)
With the extend cold weather,the freeze plugs will pop out of the engine block.
If you coolant mixture ratio is below 50/50 then the coolant will freeze and expand well above -34F

You MUST replace all freeze plugs before you start the engine.
Low or no coolant will over heat the cylinder head and damage the head gasket. ====
A radiator shop will able to do a compression test on the cooling system.
Coolant is toxic to pets! Please do your best to clean up general area and inspect the source of the leak.

We need to remove the drives side head rest to install a seat cover, but we cannot figure out how to remove the head rest. How do you remove the driver's side head rest?


Head Restraints Removal
  1. Unscrew front seat head rest guide rod retainers (610A18) .
  1. Pull up on front seat back head restraint (611A08) . Compress foam in area of front seat head rest guide rod sleeves (610A16) .
  1. Remove front seat back head restraint positioning springs. Pull front seat back head restraint up and out.
Installation
  1. Slide front seat head rest guide rod retainers onto front seat back head restraint posts.
  1. Compress foam in front seat head rest guide rod sleeve area. Install positioning springs on front seat head rest guide rod sleeves .
  1. Insert front seat back head restraint posts (notches on posts facing rearward) into front seat head rest guide rod sleeves and push down to engage positioning spring.
  1. NOTE: Front seat back head restraint must operate smoothly throughout its range of travel, must remain in any fixed position, and must not be freely removable from the seat back. If any of these conditions are not met, check for proper installation of positioning spring onto front seat head rest guide rod sleeve .

    Tighten front seat head rest guide rod retainers onto front seat head rest guide rod sleeves .
  1. Adjust front seat back head restraint by applying hand pressure, either up or down, to center area of front seat back head restraint .

How can i tell if my ford windstar needs the head gaskets changed?


overheating, white smoke from tail pipe(ignore this one during cold weather), oil is light brown or milky looking which indicates water in the oil, and of course loosing coolant when there is no coolant leak

My olds is constantly overheating even though i changed the thermostat do i have to now change the head gasket?


things to check
1 coolant level is FULL
2 is the temp. gauge jerky when it moves if so you have air in the cooling system
3 check make sure the COOLING FANS ARE WORKING
4 remove the PCV VALVE front valve cover and see if there is a WHITE ISH COLORED GOO ON IT if so the INTAKE MANIFOLD GASKET IS THE LIKELY CAUSE
5 if all that is good then jack up the vehicle and slide under and look at the BACK CYLINDER HEAD SEE IF THERE IS COOLANT LEAKING OR COOLANT STAINS if so then the HEAD GASKET IS THE CAUSE

Engine Coolant Loss with No Visible Leaks (Reseal Injector Sleeve)

Some owners may comment on engine coolant loss with no visible leaks. Excessive white smoke or a coolant type odor coming from the exhaust pipe, along with low coolant levels, may indicate coolant in the combustion chamber.
Cause
Condition may be caused by engine coolant entering the cylinder due to a dirty or damaged seal between the fuel injector sleeve and the cylinder head.

If it's black smoke, you could have a faulty or dirty EGR valve and may not be closing 100%. Remove the EGR valve and clean it with spraying carb cleaner and reinstall after inspecting the valve can move without any binding. Goo luck and hope this helps.

your raidator fins my be clogged and also you shouldnt have a clutch fan on it it should be a locked fan!!!! for more air flow!!!
