Question about 1997 Ford Explorer AWD

I have a 97 Ford Explorer that makes a loud clunking noise during acceleration...if I baby it it doesn't happen and it goes away after I've reached 50 or 60...only happens during acceleration

Could be a rod bearing going bad.or could be bad gas causing it to spark knock realy bad. try to put some 93 octane in and see if it goes away.

Could be bad unbalanced tires. If the noise changes when you turn/change lanes, then it is likely a wheel bearing.

Clunking accelerating or turning sharply to the left.


Check the front suspension ball joints and steering joints. Check wheel bearings and adjustment. Check shock absorber mounts for condition . Check steering insert condition and top mount rubbers and bearings if McPherson strut set up.. If you have a steering shock absorber then check it's condition and mounting

Clunking/ticking noise during acceleration in 3rd and 4th gears


This sounds on the base of it to be pre ignition, if so the moment you take the foot off the gas it goes? The cure is to retard the ignition timing slightly, have you recently changed your octane of fuel? this will also cause this?
The noise is caused by the expansion of the compressed gases expanding before the piston reaches top dead centre causing the piston to \'rattle\' left unchecked will cause permanent damage and engine failure

Loud Vibration / Sound Under Acceleration And Starting Engine.


Get the engine mounts checked. A bad mount may allow part of the engine to lie on a body or frame part, allowing engine vibrations to become very loud. Torquing of the engine (under load) can cause the same type problems.

you can check the wheels make sure there on tight and make sure you tie rods and wheel bearings are good
