do you have a second key ? does it do the same thing ?

  • mrscovert Jan 04, 2011

I don't have a second key. I actually just ordered one through the internet at half the price. When I called the dealership today, they stated that the battery is most likely dead. We tried to jump the Jeep but nothing. Do you think I should disconnect the battery and have it tested? Have you ever had this issue?

    Thanks!

My dealership is wanting $50.00 per key to program!! I think that is outragous! I have had my keys programmed before by Ford and others and they have never even charged me. Is this normal? Do you think I should try to take it to another dealership to see if they will program it for free or at least a reduced price? How much does it usually cost through a locksmith? Thanks again! You have been very helpful!

Wait till you get the second key and try it. test your battery voltage to see if it's good. remember, the fob has to be programmed to the vehicle, either a locksmith or a dealer can do those usually

it is normal to charge $ for programming and the price seems fair, but i don't know if it's good for where you live.

programming requires a special tool that not every garage has and it's expensive, sorry !

Program new key fob for Cadillac cts 2003

There are several methods of doing this - but your 2003 requires that you either go to the dealer for them to add a FOB with special equipment (ask if they'll do it for free - can't hurt). If you have time to kill, you can do it yourself with Method 3 as described and found at:

Key Fob Reprogramming General Cadillac Forums

Method 3 - Key Fob Auto Learn

This procedure will first erase all known key fobs. The procedure will then program a single or multiple key fobs. Method 3 is a series of three 10-minute key cycles, for a total of 30 minutes. This procedure requires that you have a replacement key fob and the vehicle mechanical key.

Important: All previously programmed key fobs will be erased upon completion of the 30-minute programming procedure. The order in which the key fobs are programmed will determine its numbering position within the RCDLR memory. The first key fob programmed will be key fob #1, and the second key fob programmed will be key fob #2. The number stamped on the key fob case is for reference only: #2 can be programmed as #1.
Do not place any known good key fobs in the vicinity of the vehicle when programming with Method 3. If the RCDLR recognizes a known good key fob during Method 3 programming, the programming mode will resort to Method 1.

The vehicle must be OFF.
Place the replacement key fob in the console pocket with the buttons facing forward.
Insert the vehicle key in the driver door lock cylinder located in the driver door handle and cycle the key 5 times within 5 seconds.
The DIC will display a message: OFF/ACC TO LEARN.
Press the OFF/ACC portion of the ignition button.
The DIC will display a message: WAIT 10 MINUTES, then it will count down from 10 to 0, one minute at a time.
When the counter reaches 0, DIC will display OFF/ACC TO LEARN.
Repeat steps 5-7 two more times, for a total of 30 minutes.
The DIC will display a message: OFF/ACC TO LEARN.
Press the OFF/ACC portion of the ignition button.
A beep will occur and the DIC will display: READY FOR FOB 1. At this time all previously known key fobs have been erased. When fob 1 is programmed a beep will be heard and the DIC will display a message: READY FOR FOB 2.
Additional key fobs can be programmed by taking fob 1 out of the pocket and inserting fob 2. If desired, up to 4 fobs can be programmed. Once 4 fobs have been learned, the DIC will display a message: MAX FOBS LEARNED, and automatically exit the program mode.
If learning less than 4 key fobs, press the OFF/ACC portion of the ignition button to exit the program mode.
Operate the active portion of each key fob in order to finalize the programming sequence and verify correct system operation.

Good luck!

The key nob is spoilt and the mechanic said i have to replace the whole steer.

I do not understand your question. What is a nob and steer? Could you please re-ask your question in a full structured sentence.

The only thing I can think of is that you are saying "the key fob is broker and the mechanic said you need a new steering column"? This does not make sense, if a key fob is damaged the key should still work, unless you have a very new volkswagen, or vehicle the requires the key fob it's self be inserted into the the ignition. In this case you wold need a new key fob from the manufacture and your problem is solved.

My key will not start my car, then it wouldn't open the door

This model year comes equipped with Keyless Enter-N-Go, which uses an electronic transmitter in the key fob to communicate with the car. The vehicle's doors will not unlock and the vehicle will not start if the key fob is not matched to the vehicle or if the commonly-available watch battery in the key fob has been depleted. The EVIC will flash a message upon vehicle startup if it determines that the battery in your key fob is low on charge and should be replaced.

To open the doors, try the following:

1. Use the spare key fob that came with the vehicle. If the battery in your main key fob is depleted, the spare key fob's battery may still retain charge due to its much more occasional use.

2. The key fob comes with an emergency key inside of it. To remove the emergency key, slide the mechanical latch on the back of the key fob sideways with your thumb and then pull the key out with your other hand. This key will allow you to unlock the driver's side door and glove compartment. It will not start the vehicle.

To start the car with a severely-depleted key fob battery, try the following:

1. In case the ignition switch does not change with the push of a button, the RKE transmitter (Key Fob) may have a low or dead battery. In this situation a back-up method can be used to operate the ignition switch. Put the nose side (side opposite of the emergency key) of the Key Fob against the ENGINE START/STOP button and push to operate the ignition switch.

To replace the battery in your key fob, try the following:

1. Remove the emergency key from the key fob following the directions above.

2. Using a vinyl spudger tool or a flat-bladed screwdriver, gently pry the two halves of the key fob apart at the indented slot above the slot for the emergency key.

3. Replace the depleted battery with a new battery. Use the depleted battery to visually match the size. The battery is usually available wherever watch or hearing-aid batteries are sold.

4. Snap the key fob back together and replace the emergency key. If the issue is a depleted battery, your key fob should operate normally.

If the issue is not related to the state of the battery, you will probably need to contact your local dealer for service.

Hi Hal,

Did you ever get this resolved? Looks like you didn't get any feedback here! I'm having the same issue sporadically. I turn the key and nothing. Usually if I keep trying it will eventually start cranking and start. Usually within 10 - 15 tries. happened last night. After it started, I got the "Service Security Key" message. I looked in the manual and it does say what that means. Don't know if it is programming (probably not because the fob works 97% of teh time) or maybe just a dying battery. If you can share anything you might have founf out I'd appreciate it! thanks!

2.5 S Altima wont start. I have replaced the car battery and the key fob battery. The dash keeps saying "no key".

Sounds like the coding on the fob is damaged. Try getting a new key. Call dealer with vin number and the will tell you the key code.

Press the LOCK button for 10 seconds.
Remove the key and wait for 10 seconds.
Check the Plip key operation.
Repeat for second Plip key if required.
Turn the ignition OFF
