On a 99 grand am the gas gauge allways reads empty what is the color is the ground wire for the gas gauge

It's not the ground wire , the gauge grounds inside the instrument cluster .Your sending unit or the gauge it's self is bad .

Gauge Control
The Body Control Module (BCM) receives Class 2 serial data messages from the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) to determine the following gauge information:
?€¢
Engine coolant temperature

?€¢

Your best bet is to take your vehicle to a qualified repair shop !
Fuel Gage Inaccurate or Inoperative

  1. Install a scan tool.
  2. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  3. Select the PCM display DTCs function on the scan tool.
Does the scan tool display any DTCs?
--
YES - Go to Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) List (2.4L) or Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) List (3.4L) in Engine Controls
NO - Go to Step 3

3

With the scan tool, select Instrument Panel Cluster, Special Functions and command the fuel gauge UP.
Does the fuel gauge complete a full sweep when commanded?
--
YES - Go to Step 4
NO - Go to Step 12
  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Disconnect the fuel level sender.
  3. Connect the J 33431-C Signal Generator and Instrument Panel Tester between the signal circuit of the fuel level sender and the ground circuit of the fuel level sender.
  4. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  5. Important: Verify the J 33431-C resistance setting with a DMM.
  6. Set the resistance on the J 33431-C to 40 ohms.
Does the fuel gauge display at or below empty?
--
YES - Go to Step 5
NO - Go to Step 6

How does the fuel gauge work on a Smart Car? It's measured in 8ths and doesn't reduce slowly but by chunks of 8hrs. The fuel economy is really heavy. Could the fuel gauge be faulty?

Just fill the car's tank up and run it for 100 miles and then refill the tank to full again. Check the miles run and fuel amount added and then check the gauge position before and after the fill and calculate the Miles per gallon. This manual check will show if the fuel gauge is not reading accurately and if you are burning excessive fuel. If you are burning excessive fuel have the engine scanned as the computer may be generating some fault codes which will help point to the possible causes of the excessive fuel usage.

2004 ford explorer fuel gauge fuse

If your fuel gauge isn't working , it's not a fuse ! The gauge or the sending unit in the fuel tank is bad . If you had other thing's not working in the instrument cluster I would say probably a fuse. There is not a fuse just for the fuel gauge . My fuel gauge just quit working in my Oldsmobile Alero. It reads empty and the low fuel light stays lit. Any ideas

it's probably the gauge is bad or the sending unit in the fuel tank is bad ,one or the other . The wiring doesn't usually go bad , usually ! What year is your olds ?
Don't know if your aware of the complexity on new vehicles ,after 1996 . Most vehicles having more then one control module , PCM - engine- transmission control module , ABS - antilock brakes ,BCM -body control module , SRS - air bags etc... Are all hooked together by a serial data communication network . It the case of your fuel gauge signal .
The instrument panel cluster (IPC) displays the fuel level as determined by the powertrain control module (PCM). The IPC receives a class 2 message from the PCM indicating the fuel level volume. The fuel gage defaults to E (empty) if:
?€¢
The PCM detects a malfunction in the fuel level sensor circuit.

?€¢
The IPC detects a loss of class 2 communications with the PCM.

When the fuel level is less than 14 percent, the low fuel indicator illuminates.
The best place to start , instead of guessing , would be to hook up a GM factory scan tool ,Tech 2 scan tool ! This would be done to see if the PCM is receiving a voltage signal from the fuel sending unit in the fuel tank . An to see if it is sending a signal to the instrument cluster .
Don't get me wrong here , there are other ways to check it ! The PCM supply's the fuel sending unit with a 5 volt reference voltage , the sending unit is what they call a potentiometer ,with the level of the fuel , it will send back a voltage signal less then five volts . The PCM will know what the fuel level is by that voltage an send it to the I / P cluster . There are videos on you tube on how to check it ! You can go to radio shack or some other electronics store an purchase different resistors ,Then find connector C-413 C413 -- 16 cavity
Fuel tank/canister vent/wheel speed sensor harnesses to body harness, under the right rear of the vehicle, near front of the gas tank. We have a special tool here at the dealer ,a signal generator
Connect the J 33431-C Signal Generator and Instrument Panel Tester between the signal circuit and the low reference circuit of the fuel level sensor on the male terminal side.
Then install the resistors one at a time to check different fuel levels , one for 1/4 , 1/2 ,3/4 an full ! Good luck hope this helps

Fuel gaga show nothink on

If your fuel gauge does not show any activity, in general you need to check if the sending unit from the fuel tank is actually sending a signal. Would need to make sure the circuitry is active, check for fuse failure. The most common fail is a faulty sending unit that is located in the fuel tank. If the sending unit is actually generating a signal then may be the gauge itself is faulty. Hope this helps.

How to replace fuel gauge on 1984 Grand Marquis

Are you sure its not the fuel sending unit and not the fuel gauge itself.Because the sending unit controls the fuel gauge level and if the float gets stuck then the fuel gauge will not work.

Can I use a 8 volt battery on a 6 volt tractor or will it trip the voltage regulator and blcck the generator?

YOU CAN USE AN 8 VOLT BATTERY, IT SHOULDN'T HURT ANYTHING. THE ONLY THING IS IT WON'T STAY FULLY CHARGED. THE GENERATOR IS DESIGNED FOR A 6 VOLT BATTERY NOT 8 VOLTS. WHAT I DO IS CHANGE THE SYSTEM TO 12 VOLTS. NOTHING WILL HAVE TO BE DONE TO THE STARTER, IF THE TRACTOR STARTS LIKE IT IS SUPPOSED TO. IT WILL JUST START FASTER. YOU WILL NEED NEW POINTS & CONDENSER & A RESISTOR FOR THE DISTRIBUTOR. ALSO A 12 VOLT BATTERY & A MID 1970'S INTERNALLY REGULATED ALTERNATOR, MOUNTED IN PLACE OF THE GENERATOR. THIS A LITTLE WORK BUT THE TRACTOR WILL START AMAZINGLY FAST. I HAVE DONE THIS SEVERAL TIMES & IT WORKS GREAT. IF THE FUEL GAUGE STILL WORKS YOU WILL NEED A SPECIAL RESISTOR FOR THAT. OF COURSE ANY LIGHTS WILL HAVE TO BE CHANGED TO 12 VOLT GOOD LUCK. DR. VOLT.
