Heater blows only slightly wam air. radiator full of coolant, no leaks. any thoughts?

Flush clogged heater core


The coolant is green because there is anti freeze and rust inhibitor that colours the water. If there was a blockage the engine would overheat. I suspect the thermostat has jammed open.

You have air trapped in system , change thermostat , bleed air from system , let it run hot while adding coolant with blower full blast on all front and rear heaters .

Heater works while car is at an idle but not while driving


The expansion tank/coolant reservoir is supposed to be vented at all times. You should not have to "bleed" air from it. Your coolant is not circulating thru the heater core because of this and you continue to have this problem if its sealed. It may even explode from the coolant being hot if not vented. Once it's vented, just top off the radiator and fill the reservoir over half way or to a mark that should be on it then drive it around. Keep a check on the reservoir coolant level and keep it half way up and you'll be fine.

You may be low on coolant - or have an air bubble in the heater core! Make sure you have the right antifreeze and mix 50/50 with water. Start car, turn heater on max heat full blast and fill reservoir with coolant. If you have access to the radiator cap I would fill from there. This is a pressurized system, so it may blow some coolant out at you. Squeeze upper radiator hose to ensure it is full, cap radiator and now recheck the reservoir. If this doesn't help, you'll need to raise the front of the vehicle so the radiator cap is above the heater core hoses. Remove cap, start engine with heater and blower on high and fill radiator. Cap radiator before you lower the car and you should be good. Keep an eye on the coolant reservoir as you may have a leak which would cause the low coolant symptom. You also have a sensor to tell you is you are low on coolant. If you are and it is not lighting up, you may want to have it ( the sensor) tested and replaced.

Heater does not warm up. it blows out cold air


I would inspect the car for coolant leaks. If there are any they need to be repaired. Check coolan level in radiator, if full than follow this procedure. Change radiator thermostat. Drain old coolant. Remove heater core hose. Take a garden hose and run water through the heater core for 3-4 minutes or until clear. Retighten Hose. Fill radiator with premix coolant. Star car and let run with defroster on and heat on full blast. Let run for 20-30 minutes and wait till radiator fan to come on. Add coolant as the level drops in the radiator.Also open coolant bleeder screws to purge out air.

the heater blowing cold at an Idle and warm while driving it,is usually low coolant in the radiator,remove the radiator cap when engine is cold,fill to the top,and fill overflow tank to full,if that doesn't take care of it,check the heater hoses at an idle and see if they are both the same temp,it might be a water pump not doing its job.

Air, no heat '98 Astro. No leaks, engine


It sounds to me that you may have 2 problems. 1). Air Lock in the Heater Core. 2). Inactive Heat Damper in the Plenum.

But since you state that the Heater Hoses do not get warm that is indicative of an Air Lock in the Heater Core. This is a relatively simple fix. It is best performed COLD but requires a method of pressurizing the Cooling System. All reputable Auto Parts stores Sell and/or Rent Pumps that temporarily replace the Radiator Pressure Cap for Leak tests and curing Air Lock. The Collant Level must be filled FULL then pressurized and then loosening the Highest Heater Hose at the Firewall so that Air and a Small Amount of Coolant escapes. Once all the Air has escaped tighten the Heater Hose Clamp, remove the Pressure Pump, Restore the Collant Level to FULL, re-install the Pressure Cap and Start the Engine. As it Warms up you should be able to feel coolant running through the Heater Hoses and they should become warm.

You could possibly have air trapped in the heater core. The easiest way to bleed it out is to jack up the front of the car till the radiator fill cap is higher than the upper heater hose using a funnel that fits snuggly in the filler neck of the radiator, fill till you have about three inches of coolant/antifreeze above the filler neckthen run the car at about 1500rpms until no more bubbles are evident. Also turn the heater onto face on low speed and feel if heat starts comming out.

It sounds to me like you're low on coolant. When you checked the coolant level, did you actually open the radiator cap and make sure the radiator is full? The plastic tank you generally add coolant too is actually an 'overflow' or 'reserve' tank. There is a hose that runs from that tank to the top of the radiator so if the radiator gets low on coolant, more coolant -should- run in from the overflow tank. However in practice this does not always work. I have a Jeep that leaks coolant and experiences this exact same problem. Coolant will not run from the reserve tank into the radiator because the hose is plugged up, and whenever the radiator gets low on coolant the temp gauge will go real high and then drop, and the heater doesn't work well. This is because the cooling system of your car is supposed to be a closed system, full of coolant and no air. When coolant leaks out, the space it used to occupy is now occupied by air, which does not transfer heat well. When 'air' is passing through your cooling system, no heat can be transferred from your engine to the heater and radiator, resulting in a hot engine and no heat at the heater. Then when a pocket of water passes through the system, the temperature gauge quickly falls as the water absorbs the heat from the engine. The hot water that cools the engine is where the heater gets it's heat from as well, so when water passes through the heater core, the heater works, but when it's filled with air, it doesn't.
