Question about Mercury Grand Marquis

Open Question

I have a 2003 Mercury Grand Marquis. The tranny shift cable rusted off. Tranny has a half moon shaped black electronic box (neutral safety???) attached to the gear selector shaft and lever, there is a secondary lever attached to this which the cable bolted to. All rusted, how do I remove these items from the shaft? Thanks.

SOURCE: Shift lever

It sounds like you may have a faulty shift interlock solenoid. It is under the center console. You can expose it and see if it is getting voltage when the vehicle is on and you foot is on the brake. If it is, replace the solenoid. If it isn't, you may have a faulty relay.

I think you have a four speed electronic overdrive like my 94 merc.

I never had problems but I changed filter and fluid and added Lucas Oil Products - Transmission Additive 24 oz do not over fill.

Atv won,t shift into reverse

2004 Mercury Grand Marquis is not an ATV. Reverse on some ATV's has a knob on the handlebar attached to a cable that sometimes goes out of rig. (the cable prevents shifting down past neutral unless pulled)

Transmission wont go into park

Get help, have helper hold set parking brake and hold foot brake, pop shift cable off of linkage bracket on trans, try to shift it by hand. Only starting in N may be broken internals on neutral safety switch.

Tranny goes on neutral sometimes and then back to normal

If you happened to become high centered on something, and tried shifting from drive to reverse, you may have bent your transmission linkage, which happened to me, and I got that fixed, but it cost me 280 dollars at a transmission shop...
