Question about 1995 Toyota Camry

1 Answer

My 95 Camry cant go into 5th gear. I was told that it was the clutch because it was making a grinding noise. I got the clutch fixed but even after that its not taking 5th gear and its still making the grinding noise. What does this mean?

If the clutch is bad it would make the same noise in every gear, because the clutch does always the same engage and disengage the trans and its different gears. So if there is a noise in a specific gear the problem is the trans-axle ( if the noise is coming from the trans axle.)

03 staurn ion 5th gear grinds going in? No other gear does this. If I let rpms drop to 1 then put into 5th gear it doesnt grind. What could this be? Expensive fix?

It sounds like you have a bad synchronizer. Before you tear the transmission apart to fix it, make sure your fluid is full. You might add some additive that can smooth things out. Also, make sure your clutch master and slave cylinders aren't leaking.

'95 del sol can't get into 5th gear

Most likely the synchronizer is bad. Even gears with chipped teeth aren't really bad. Make a little noise maybe, but still work.

Lost speed.5th gear stoped working

old car. 5th gear? is this M/T? 1987 ?
A/T? is 4speed

what does stopped working mean .
1: shifter fails to select 5 gear H pattern slot.
2: grinds?
3: cant force it to 5th with clutch depressed.? is free play at spec?
4: raise front wheels off ground, can you get in to 5th now? keyout and running?
5: can you get into 5th parked engine off, and select 5th and then start car in 5th with clutch depresses first step. then slowly very slowly attempt to move car starting in 5th, but dont finish, just feel the gear, feel that its there and not neutral.

not working ,says nothing at all.

PLEASE HELP Metal grinding while driving

Sounds like the thrust bearing is worn to the bleep. Though I suspect it's not Synchromeshing. Some part of the Clutch mechanism failing critically.
See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manual_transmission#Synchromesh

Did it run out of Oil? BUT then maybe damage has been done to both the internal of the Gearbox as well as the clutch, so yeah STOP driving it before more damage that can set you back a fortune

96 nissan sentra 5th gear grind

Mor than likely damaged one of the planetary gear sets. Grinding in a trnasmission or rear end is a sign of loss of contact between meshing gears. Automatic transmissions engage two sets of gears internal to the trans to create a forward drive gear, changing between the gear sets creates different ratios anwhich in turn aloows for higher speeds. If the trans only grinds when in fifth range there is mopre than likely internal damage to the gears which 5th needs to operate. I would start by pulling the dip stick for the ****** and check for black or shiney material on the stick. I would then take a sample of oil from the trans by draining some from the drain plug if it has one, or possible drop the pan and check for foriegn matter in the fluid. Peices of metal shaving point to gear damage, and black material pont towards clutch wear/ damage. A worn or damaged clutch will cuase that specific gear not to engage and cause a grinding noise. Either way the concern is internal

Just recently changed my clutch in my 1995 geo metro. it was working fine. car was tuned up before my long road trip from orlando to nyc. until when i reached sometime in NC, and 4th gear will not...

the shift linkage may need to be adjusted a bit or the shift forks and engaged gears for 4th and 5th may have worn enough that they need to be inspected and fixed.

I have a 1997 golf gti and when i **** from 1st to 2nd something hits the ground i dont know what it is. Secondlly its making a bit of a grinding noise from the exhast manifold almost sounds like a diesel...

Sounds like when they replaced the engine some of the clamps and mountings should have been replaced as well. The clutch should certainly have been replaced. First to second is almost always a big change under acceleration so it is probably an engine mounting that is making the noise as sounding like a big clunk, the connection between the exhaust manifold and the exhaust pipe is probably where the other noise is coming from. It is a spring loaded joint and does take a hammering when one of the mountings go bad.
