Question about 1988 Oldsmobile Toronado

1 Answer

On my 1988 Olds Toronado , 3.8L, I replaced the ignition coil pack after it was determined faulty and now it cranks but no spark is reaching the plug wires. I cheked all wiring and relays and was wondering if it could be the ignition control module or computer. Also i was wondering if anyone knew the check engine codes ( by the flashes) without having it hooked up to a scanner and the exact placement of the jumper wire for the scanner connection.

Why wont my 2002 olds alero start when its cold out

One of the coil packs or the ignition module is probably bad. Test for spark when cold. If no spark on any coils suspect the ignition module or crank position sensor. If spark is gone on only one coil check the plugs and wires to that coil pack. If theplugs and wires are ok then replace thge coil pack. Don't forget the obvious load test the battery and clean the battery connections. If the check engine light is on run any diagnostic codes and repair

87 oldsmobile toronado not getting any spark

ECM requires both crank sensor signal and cam sensor signal to fire the coils. Check for spark at the plugs first. Check the plug wires, then the coils. Only if you have no spark at any coil would I suspect the ignition module, and even then only if you have a good crank and cam signal. Do you have any codes stored in the ECM? They could help pinpoint the problem.

My 2003 honda accord v6 refuses to start. It cranks but no spark on the plug. What should i do?

Either the spark plug is faulty or the coil pack is faulty. The spark plugs get power to spark from coil packs.

If the engine has no spark, check for voltage at the coil positive terminal when the ignition key is on. If NO voltage, then problem is on the trigger side of the coil (pickup, crank sensor, ignition module or primary wiring circuit).

But If there is NO voltage at the coil itself, then in that case the problem is on the supply side (the ignition switch or ignition wiring circuit).

But if the coil has voltage, then problem may be a bad high voltage output wire from the coil to spark plugs or hairline cracks in the coil output tower.------Getting this all possibilities checked will point towards the exact faulty part which is to be replaced.----------This should help.Thanks.Helpmech.

1990 OLDS TROFEO WAS RUNNING GOOD NEXT DAY ENGINE TURNNING OVER BUT WONT START....GAS IN IT...

i have 2 of them it either the PCM under the right side of the dash behind the glove compartment or it the crank sensor. If those dont fix the problem. The other thing is the distributorless ignition or othewise known as the coil packs. Replace the whole piece. Email me at doryhilll@yahoo.com

I have what appears to be a oil and fuel leak. 1988 olds toronado

1. Check the oil (with dipstick) see if it smells the same as the oil spot you were detecting.

2. Fuel leaks are usually accompanied by a strong odor of fuel and time the vehicle is running.

I will guess that this car has quite a few miles on it. Having the gas ending up in the oil a bit is normal for high miles engines. As they get older they should be changed more often to keep this from happening.

As for the oil leak, only a visual inspection can determine the leak source. I would bet on a seal.

What is the coil pack for the 88 olds 98

it is part of the ignition system. the ignition system provides spark to ignite the fuel/air mixture at precisely the right time in the correct cylinder. If you have a coil pack you dont have a distributor and the ignition gets its reference from the crank position sensor.

I think that the coil packs has installed wrong because you said that the problem started when you replaced them... so i think you should re-install.
