Hi, #4 cylinder is second back on the passenger side of the engine. With a 304, you want to pull the plug out and see if it's dirty or broken. Put it back into the wire and see if you can hold it to the engine while someone cranks the engine. Use an oven mitt to avoid being shocked. If the engine starts, it will be loud, so have them shut it off as soon as you have verified if there are sparks jumping. If there are no sparks from the plug, take it out of the wire and try again with just the coil/wire. If there are no sparks from the coil/wire, replace them. If there are, replace the spark plug. If there were sparks at the plug, the problem likely to be either a bad/clogged injector or a burned valve. I doubt the burned valve, but clogged injector is always possible. If you hold a long screwdriver up to the injector and hold the other end to your ear, you can listen for the injector to click. If it isn't clicking, you may need a new injector. If it is, you can try some injector cleaner to see if it clears up. If not, I would run a compression test just to verify the valve is good, then I would pull the injector and check it's spray pattern. Please take a look at this post for a few more details and let me know if you have any questions: http://www.fixya.com/cars/r6715318-causes_gasoline_engine_misfires

I have 2002 chevy avalanche, check engine light comes on only when its cold & runs rough at idle. When warmer weather light goes off & runs fine. Have replaced mass air flow sensor.

Mine did the same thing...at 42F degrees, run bad. After it warm up, it would be fine. This would only happen in the winter. It would throw a code saying it was lean in Bank 1 or 2.
The issue is a contraction of the intake gasket due to the cold weather, when it contracts, it leaks air. There is a new, improved gasket now from GM, or get a Felpro from major auto stores and it will work fine. I consistently had the problem every winter, and this has fixed the problem for the last 3-4 years.

2003 Ford Ranger 4x4 extended cab- diagnostics checked and got these codes- P0171, P0174, P0300, P0316. Can you tell me what they mean?

P0171------ system too lean bank#1
Po174------ system too lean bank#2
For these 2 codes, try cleaning the maf sensor (mass air flow), that is mounted in the big black hose that goes from the air filter housing to the throttle plate, if it is dirty, that will cause those 02 sensors to send a signal to the computor to lean the air fuel mixture. If cleaning it doesn't work, the sensors will probably need changing.
P0300---- Random/multiple cylinder misfire
P0316---- Cylinder misfire at start up---- first 100 revolutions.
On those 2 codes, you have to do some testing to find out why there is a misfire.
Possible causes:
dirty/malfunctioning injectors
weak coil pack
fowling spark plugs/wires
Low fuel pressure
