Question about 1996 Chrysler Concorde

2 Answers

I have a 1996 Chrysler Concorde LXi, and the CV joint on the driver's side went bad. The car made a grinding noise, and came to a stop. I couldn't move forward or reverse. We fixed the CV joint (got a new one), installed it, and took the car on a test drive. We got to the end of the block, stopped at the Stop sign, and the car wouldn't move forward or reverse again. What could the issue be?

Hello did you install a joint with boot or the inner outer and shaft one piece assembly?

It was installed with the boot . . . I didn't do it, but I watched a friend of mine who replaced the driver's side cv joint before. I'm wondering if maybe it wasn't inserted properly . . . like, I'm not sure if it has anything to do with the splines. When I accelerate it doesn't move, and he said the rod that goes inside the transmission flops around, but I'm wondering if it just wasn't in correctly because when he FIRST put it in, the car drove fine . . . it's just when we stopped it refused to move again.

OK inside the joint a retainer clip has not been put back properly and popped off now separated and slipping and just spinning going no where. If the axle was not in or locked all the way in to the trans mission the shaft wouldn't allow anything else to go back on including the tire so you will have to take it back apart open the joint and see the damage your probably going to end up replacement of the whole drive shaft.

You have two problems, 1. the cv joint and probably a worn out steering rod link.

Ticking in motor after engine heats up- do you keep your oil changed every 3,000 miles? Broken down and dirty oil will cause this. Squeek over bumps could be bad strut or it could be related to the harsh grinding noise going around turns. That is indicative of a bad CV joint or wheel bearing.
Raise car on side noise is coming from. Grab wheel with both hands and pull/push on wheel then wiggle back and forth. Feel excessive play? Grab drive axle also doing same thing feel for play or notice if rubber boot on drive axle torn or separated from axle. Usually you will feel play or notice a kind of clunking. I would say replace CV joint and wheel bearing at the same time as one will usually affect the other and both will be bad if one has went out. Not an easy fix and requires special tools. Take to a qualified mechanic, it will save you a big headache.

When I was driving my 1996 Geo Prizm at around 25mph, I heard a popping sound and then the grinding started like it was rubbing metal to metal. When I turn to the right, it sounds louder. I had the brakes...

CV Joint went out. since it gets worse when you turn right it is most likely an inside drivers side CV joint or the out side passenger side. The popping sounds was probably the dust boot popping from pressure build up which should make it simple to locate since you just need to identify the boot with a tear in it.

I have a 1996 plymouth breeze it is leaking oil from the driver side toward the top of the engine and howcan i tell if the cv shaft needs replaed i have a used one will it work? it also has a problem wih...

Oil on the top of the engine wouldn't be coming from a cv joint.
If you are lucky it's leaking out of the bottom of valve covers. If it's a main seal in the front or back it's a bigger problem.

You can tell if a CV joint is going bad, because it will make a grinding noise/ jerky in a tight turn. They usually go bad after the rubber boot is cracked or torn. If the used one is in good condition it could be used, but if it was removed from another car it may be worn also.

When the van is driven my front end is making a knocking noise my front driver side wheel shakes and the steering wheel shakes

Front wheel drive cars have CV joints in the axles to permit the wheel to turn for steering. The CV joint is basically a universal joint on steroids. When they ware out it can cause this type of condition.
