Question about Dodge Durango

I need to change a flat on the rear drivers side. I removed the lugs but can't get the wheel off. is there something else to remove or is it just stuck?

Alot of times the wheel is just stuck to the hub from corrosion.
I use a large rubber mallet and just strike the rim repeatedly until it breaks free.
DO NOT use a metal hammer as this could cause denting and the tire may not seat properly once replaced

The wheel sounds like it's rusted on the hub. you may have to hit from the inside edge to loosen it, Be careful! good luck.

2002 Montero Sport removing the rear passenger tire has a flat


Hi,

Changing the wheel/tire on this vehicle is not significantly different from any other car or truck.

You will need to first pop off the center cap if you have one so that you have a clear shot at the wheel lugs.
Use your tire iron or a 21mm socket and breaker bar to loosen all lug nuts 1-2 turns.
Place your jack under the vehicle.... if you are using a scissor jack you can use the pinch weld of the body just forward of the rear wheel (the vertical stamped metal rib), or if you have a bottle jack or floor jack you can also lift from the front of the trailing arm or directly below the axle behind the wheel.
Once the wheel is off the ground, remove the lug nuts the rest of the way.

At this point the wheel should come off. If it is frozen on the truck from age/rust, you can use a rubber mallet to strike the back side of the sidewall to help jar it loose. If you do not have a mallet you can kick the inside side wall with your foot, however you do not want to do this if you are using a scissor jack or if you are on uneven ground, so as to avoid knocking the truck off the jack.

With the wheel off you can take it to a shop for dismounting/replacement of the tire; this can not be done without special equipment.

Place the repaired wheel/tire or spare on the truck and tighten the lug nuts finger tight so that the wheel is flush (not tilting).
Lower the jack and remove it.
Use your tire iron or 21mm socket and breaker bar to tighten the lug nuts the rest of the way.

If you are using a spare tire, the tail gate mounted spare is removed by simply taking off the lug nuts holding it on; The under-mounted spare is lowered to the ground by unscrewing the 21mm nut located under the cargo cover in the rear center of the truck. This nut operates a winch which will lower the tire to the ground when turned anti clockwise, and draws it back up to the truck when turned clockwise.

Flat front tire


you probably have alloy wheels. take rubber headed hammer and hit one side of the wheel, be careful because the wheel could hit you when it comes off.

Having difficulty changing front drivers side tire on the Jaguar x type 2003. the tire is flat and we cannot seem to remove the tire


If all the lug nuts are removed and the tire will not come off it is frozen onto the hub. This is really common with aluminum wheels. If you can safely support the vehicle so that it will not fall off the jack you can try kicking the backside of the tire. This will work most of the time.

If that doesn't work put the lug nuts on till there just snug and then loosen them 3 or 4 turns. remove the jack and drive the vehicle back and forth until the wheel falls off the hub.

Everyone I work with as well as myself, have at least a four pound plastic deadblow hammer just to remove the wheels that this happens to.

How to get drum pads off a 2000 dodge caravan


The pad drums of your 2000 Dodge Grand Caravan can wear with use. Heat buildup in the brakes can glaze, warp or crack the drum. If that happens, replacement of the drum is the only way to fix it. In most cases, you can remove the rear drums, replace them with a new set and leave the existing shoes on the van. Take a minute and inspect the brake shoes thoroughly while you have the drums off the van.


  1. Loosen the lug nuts on the rear of your 2000 Dodge Grand Caravan with a lug wrench. Do not take them off the wheel studs.
  2. Raise the rear of the van with a jack and support it on a set of jack stands. Place the stands under the rear suspension, making sure they are secure. Remove the lug nuts from the wheel studs and pull off the rear wheels.
  3. Check the rear drum where the wheel studs come through for retaining clips. These are used during the manufacturing process; and if they are still on your van, they need to be removed. Pry the clip off the wheel stud with a flat head screwdriver and discard them. Most vehicles will have two clips on each brake drum.
  4. Grasp the brake drum on the outer edges and pull it straight off the wheel studs and brake pads. Discard the old drum and slide the new drum into place, aligning the holes in the drum with the wheel studs. Push the drum in until it seats completely. Repeat the process on the opposite side of the van.
  5. Position the wheel back on the wheel studs and install the lug nuts by hand. Raise the back of the van with a jack and remove the jack stands from under the suspension. Lower the van to the ground and tighten the lug nuts with a lug wrench.

Changing rear flat tire


Find jack follow instructions to raise vehicle after parking brake is on. Remove lug nuts and take wheel with flat tire off. Replace with the spare tire and tighten lug nuts. lower vehicle, put jack , lug wrench and flat tire in vehicle. Drive to a tire repair store and fix the problem.

I have a 1977 Dodge. Model # M500, removing inner dually tire


THE INNER STUDS FOR THE INNER WHEELS ARE NUTS AS WELL AND SECURE THE INNER WHEEL. USE A SQUARE DRIVE TO REMOVE THESE STUD/NUTS. DRIVER SIDE NUTS/STUD ARE LEFT HANDED(STAMPED WITH A BIG (L)). AND PASS SIDE RIGHT HANDED. THESE TORQUE SPEC OUT @ 400-450 LB FT. OF TORQUE, YOU WILL HAVE TO USE A CHEATER BAR OR HEAVY DUTY INPACT!

How to Replace a Brake Drum
(DIY Complexity: Moderate / Time: 2.1 hours)

Parts:
1. Brake Drum

Tools:
1. Jack Stand Set
2. Mallet Hammer
3. Flat Head Screwdriver
4. Floor Jack
5. Combination Wrench Set
6. 3/8 in. Drive Ratchet
7. Tire Iron
8. Socket Set

Supplies:
1. Brake Cleaner

Steps:
Step 1 Secure the vehicle on a level surface, making sure the vehicle will not roll or lean when jacked up.
o Tip: Safety Tip:Always wear safety glasses when working on your vehicle. Wear other personal protective equipment (PPE) when necessary, for example latex gloves or safety shoes.

Step 2 Remove the rear wheel hub caps (if necessary) to gain access to the lug nuts. Using a tire iron or lug nut wrench, break loose the rear wheel lug nuts but do not remove.
o Tip: Turn the lug nuts counter clockwise to loosen. If the lug nuts are too tight, use a breaker to gain more leverage.

Step 3 Using a floor jack, lift up the rear of the vehicle.
o Tip: Using an aftermarket floor jack, instead of the original equipment (OE) jack, can make the job easier and safer. Verify the condition of the floor jack before use.

Step 4 Secure the vehicle with jack stands on both sides for safety before starting any work. The pinch welds or the frame rails are the two best locations. Do not rely on the jack to hold the vehicle up while working.
o Tip: Try to find a flat, level, and strong surface to put the jack stands.

Step 5 Remove the lug nuts. Remove the rear wheels.

Step 6 Remove the brake drum by pulling it outwards.
o Tip: Make sure the parking brake is released before removing the brake drum.

Step 7 Visually inspect the brake drum for cracking, scoring or grooving. If any of these conditions are found, the brake drum will need to be resurfaced or replaced.

Step 8 Visually inspect the brake shoe linings and drum brake components for damage or wear.

Step 9 Replace worn components if necessary.

Step 10 Install the new or resurfaced brake drum.

Step 11 Reinstall the wheel. Torque the lug nuts to the manufacturer’s specification.

Step 12 Remove the rubber grommet from the backing plate. Insert a screw driver into the slot and turn the star wheel adjuster to adjust the brake shoes out.
o Tip: Turn the star wheel adjuster until you feel a slight drag while spinning the wheel.

Step 13 Road test the vehicle.

Sheared front lug


First remove wheel from car. Next take large hammer and drive whats left of lug out, you may need to use a punch if sheared off below hub hight. Now insert new lug stud in from back side of hub and use a open style lug nut (like those you see on old cars without nice wheels) and put on upside down, flat side towards hub. tighten up by hand then use socket to tighten down untill stud is pulled in all the way. In some cases you may need to use a few washes under nut to give enough room for shank on stud.

Instructions to replace sheared off lugs / studs - 1997 Chevy


You can remove old lug by driving it out with a decent sized hammer. To re-install, push new one into flange from backside and stack washers on wheel side, leaving enough room for the lug nut to go on. (backwards...flat side in) Tighten the nut, pulling the lug into the flange, till it is flush (like the unbroken ones) I suggest that you put some lube on lug threads to prevent binding while doing this.
