Sound like the float has a hole in it and fills with fuel when the tank fills up, you will have ti remove the gas tank and check the float, most of the time you can replace the unit as one.

I dropped the tank on my '99 Durango, installed a new fuel pump unit but the fuel gauge still shows empty. How do I troubleshoot?

The fuel gauge is directly controlled by the fuel sending unit inside the fuel tank, it sends a ground return signal back to the fuel gauge. I am assuming of course that your fuel gauge is okay. To test your fuel gauge, connect the wire which goes to the fuel sending unit to chassis ground. Your fuel gauge should respond and indicate Full Tank. If not, there is a broken wire somewhere between your fuel gauge and the sending unit. Before connecting the wire that goes to the sending unit to ground, check it first with a DC Voltmeter, you should be able to read +12volts. Be sure that you turn your ignition switch to it's ON position.

Gauge reads full when tank is empty

You have a bad ground, you will have to remove the fuel tank and check the connectons on top of the tank, probably corroded. You can clean the terminals or change them.

I got a 2001 Chevy Venture and fuel gauge always stays on full

The problem is in the fuel sender unit in the tank. It sounds like the float part of the sender unit is binding when it's at the top (when tank is full) and hangs up there till it falls back down when tank is near empty. It will likely have to come out to be checked, fixed, or replaced. Good luck.

I have a 2003 GMC Envoy and my gas gauge has been flowing up and down to empty and full recently it has stayed on empty. How do I fix it?

Ensure that all of the wire connections are clean, secure and corrosion-free.

  • 2 Check your fuel gauge fuse if the gauge's indicator stays on empty when your turn on the ignition. If the fuse is good, join the sending unit connector to ground. Replace the sending unit if the gauge indictor moves to the full line.
  • 3 Ground the terminal located on the back of the fuel gauge with a jumper wire if the indicator doesn't move. If it does move, consider replacing the wire between the fuel gauge and the sending unit. A poor ground is frequently responsible for fuel gauge problems.
  • 4 Release the wire that connects to the fuel tank's sending unit. Confirm that there's no worn insulation that would permit wire contact to the body or frame. A fuel gauge reading of full generally indicates a problem with the tank unit, not the wiring.

Gauge registers 3/4 full when full, then needle slowly goes down to empty. Flucuates between empty and 3/4 full while driving.

hi its either the fuel gauge playing up in the dash up or the fuel sender on the fuel pump in the tank

89 jeep Grand Wagoneer fuel gauge not reading.

Did the mechanic use an OEM replacement unit or an after-market unit? I think the original unit has a damping circuit to prevent immediate response when accelerating/stopping/cornering; the needle reacts slowly to changes in fuel level. If the new unit shows an immediate transient response, but settles back down to the actual fuel level, I'd just live with it.
