my lumina does the same thing, it starts and works fine, new oil,new dex cool and had the systeme flushed. the probleme seems to be that the thermostat sticks to a point where it cant open anymore. i noticed that the inside of the rad was coverd in black muck, i thought the head guaskets where fried ,but after further inspection they are fine. so, my thought is , that the only way to get this probleme solved is to get that black muck out and get it cleaned from the inside. that black stuff seems to seep thru, gets beetween the gap of the thermo and wen i shut it off, the car cools down,so those the muck and at that point it hardens and jams the systeme. one flush did not work.some speek of a relay switch in the systeme that could be the probleme but havent goten that far wet! best luck. ! My lumina keeps overheating. Changed the thermostat. Still overheats. Fans dont seem to be kicking on, and not much pressure in the radiater- can sqeeze the hose.

I had the same problem when i flushed my lumina out the car will overheat easily. I took it to the dealer and the found out that it was air stuck in a valve. I still dont get where the air was in, but after they took the air out the car went back to normal.

If you have changed the water pump AND the radiator AND the thermostat and still have the problem then the hoses should be checked to be sure they are not collapsing, also make sure that the coolant is 50/50 water and coolant and the thermostat is installed right.

Motor overheating rapidly

When the car is dead cold.
Open the radiator cap & check antifreeze.
If it is not up to the cap, add some their as well as res. tank.

No lucks.

Make sure you have the right mix of water and coolant. IT should be 50/50,
check the radiator for mineral build up.
Change the radiator cap.
Change the thermostat.
Check the water pump fins for excess wear

You can no longer use the vehicle, common sense

Sounds like either the thermostat stuck closed, the cooling
fans failed to come on, or you have a bad head gasket.

You do know that the engine is overheading and has to
be diagnosed and that issue repaired

That Trans Issues, you work on after the engine overheating.

Even if the trans is okey, you will need to change the
fluid,not flush it.

Water pump replaced yesterday now engine is over heating. Could it be the thermostat also? or could it be air pocet causing problem?

yes i t could be the thermostat but before u change that make sure u dont have air in the cooling system.first raise your car up so that the overflow resivoir or rad is at the highest point ,open cap ,turn on vehicle and let it get hot.if it still overheating and not drawing any coolant shut off the vehicle, replace the res or rad cap back on and alow time to cool.when u come back and check after, coolant should have made, its way through the sysytem .if coolant is low repeat process untill u reach hot line on resivor.

Surely the thermostat is faulty. Fan only kicks in when sitting for 5 minutes or more. A plugged exhaust will cause overheating, but would be hot all the time. You thermostat should be changed and you should add 50/50 coolant

your thermostat is either no good or is stuck.replace it.and now you need to check the sides of the radiator(tubes) for a crack.

Sounds like you may need a new Thermostat.

Get a Haynes or Chilterns manual and a new Thermostat for the carfrom a car parts place like Autozone. Its normally a simple opperation to change it.
