You won't know why the engine light is on unless you get the OBDII port hooked to a scanner to get the code or codes that have been cited by the ECM (Engine Control Module). You should do this first, especially since you notice a problem with the trans-a malfunctioning trans is very expensive to repair and can be fatal in very short order. you can get it scanned for free at numerous retail auto parts operations like Advance Auto, Auto Zone, Aamco transmissions (be aware they will try to sell you something-be prepared to say thanks and investigate the actual codes, so write them down).

The hood will take getting underneath the front of the car and figuring out a way to pull the cable to the latch-some disassembly may be necessary to put yourself in a position to do this, some are easy to do and some are quite difficult. A good body shop should be able to do this for you without it costing a lot of money.

Your have a check light on your dash ! (nothing new there)
We have has those for 35 years

You didn't check for OBD Codes & Google them?

You have a transmission problem (stop using it)

Drive ten miles or more & risk ruining
a $4,000 transaxle (OBD Codes & read up)

Ever read your owners manual or even have one?

A 1993 pontiac wouldnt know if the gas cap was on or off. You cant fix it untill you know why the light is on. You need the computer scanned and a trouble code to go further., plus what engine you have (8th VIN number)

My check engine light is on along with a message in the odometer box saying check gas cap. i looked underneath and all hoses seem tight. ive replaced the cap but to no success. whats the best way to check...

You seemed to look everywhere but how about under the hood?what manufacture want to do is seperate
the check engine light from coming on due to a gas cap leak, you have at the gas tank a vent valve and in the engine area a purge valve, the most common problem besides a broken purge solenoid it self or wire and the vent solenoid and wire or canister problem is vacuum to the purge valve, its a small hose that breaks at the connection ,your hood diagram will point it out as a hose to a purge system just look at the hoses connection there is not too many there

Went on trip, drove a little over 500 miles to destination. When went from one freeway to another car seemed to go into a limp mode after slowing to bout 20- 25 mph. I reset by putting it in park turning...

PO456 is most times a gas cap or gasket,
to get an incorrect gear ratio the transmission has probably started to slip.

Change the fluid and filter first off in the transmission and use only atf+4 fluid and possibly the govenor pressure sensor, and change gas cap.

Service engine light came on, after lifting hood

Were you at a service station fiiling your gas tank when you had your washer level checked? If yes, your gas cap is not enough tight. You must hear few clicks sound by the end tighting your cap back in place.
If it's the case, tight it correctly and chances are that the code/service light will disappear by itself during the next few days.

If it's not related to the gas cap iI don't see any relation with opening the hood. If the light stays on permanently visit your auto parts and ask them to get the OBD code from your vehicule computer.
Hope it will help

"Service enging soon" light stays on....

This could be a number of things causing this ...most common is that after you fill up the gas cap is not fully tightened...make sure it "clicks" 3 times while turning. The other common problem is that the gasket on the gas cap is old and thus does not seal the tank/fuel filler area...check with replacing the cap.If neither correct then you will need to bring to a service center or dealer to run a code check...maybe a bad O2 sensor or a code for the transmission.

Malfunction indicator lamp is on

i had same problem .. the echo depends on a good seal for the gas cap .. it draws a slight vacuum (or maybe pressure) to test the seal .. if it cant develop the vacuum then it sets the alarm light .... in my case a small crack in the rubber seal of the gas cap caused the problem .. a new gas cap resolved it .. it takes a while to clear the code .. maybe a few starts .. its also a good idea to clean up the mouth of the gas filler tube ..if its rusty or dirty then you cant get a good seal .. wd40 does a nice job of cleaning .. the new gas cap was only a few dollars at advanced auto but lacks the teather strap

the diagnostic scan at autozone does not narrow it down .. it just indicates something like "faulty polution control device" .. or maybe it was an even more generic term .. cant remember ..but not much help ..

in other cars (caravan) the oxygen sensor frequently seems to be the cause of the alarm.. .. the scanner does flag that ..

get the truck where you can service it and have a transmission service done this will include: new fluid and transmission filter
because it sounds as if it has not been changed in awhile open the hood and if the transmission fluid smells cooked change it right away
