It is a front wheel drive engine, the trans in on the driver-side next to the driver-side wheel.

From your description and the years, the 94 tranny came fruom a car without electronic engine control and the 98 is from ECM controlled car. They are not exactly compatible even though the car can be driven.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news. You must abandon all hope of your transmission miraculously working on its own again. You need to have your transmission replaced or overhauled. Sorry

There are really only 2 possibilities which are within your reach

- low trans fluid level, check that with engine idling
- poorly adjusted shift linkage, see p69 here

If anything else has failed, like a shift solenoid, it's really a job for a specialist.

Solenoids on this vehicles transmission are located within the transmission. The transmission oil and oil pan must be removed to access.

solenoids on this vehicle transmission is located inside the transmission. You must drain the transmission oil, then remove the transmission oil pan to access it.

I need to locate the filler cap on my 94 toyota camry 4 cylinder automatic

Your transmission is filled though the dip stick tube. You will need a very small funnel and pour slow or it will backup. And don't add too much, it doen't hold very much.
