Question about 1999 Jeep Wrangler

3 Answers

Makes a screeching sound in cold weather only when accelerating above 20mph. Sound goes away after the jeep has been running and warms up. Can't tell where the sound is coming from because we only hear it when the car is in gear and accelerates above 20mph.

Probably the belt that goes to the alternator, your alternator puts larger loads on the belt when it is cold due to it's effort to get voltage up to specs. As the belt slips, it also warms up and will not slip as much if at all. It will eventually cause problems though, which is why you should change it now.

often times the engine needs to warm up to normal operating temperature. this varies from makes and models. if you cant wait that long, having it idle for approximately 5 - 10 minutes should at least lessen the acceleration problem, but the longer you wait the better it will be on the engine.

Check for the Universal Joint wear in the driveline. If it gets louder and louder and the clicking doesn't seem to go away on acceleration on the highway, then it's time to replace it.

I have a 2001 Jeep TJ.4.0L I6 5Speed 176,000Km When the engine is cold, at 1800RPM it makes a whining sound. It goes away when driven a couple miles.

It sounds like you need to replace the serpentine belt when they get old they will whine and when they warm up alot of times it will quit and sometimes not but it sounds like you just need a new serpentine belt which runs your water pump, alternator, powersteering.

I have a roaring sound when i start the envoy what can it be? when I put it in neutral the noise goes away and too if i have been driving it for awile the noise goes away it only roars when I start it...

That's the fan clutch for the radiator fan. It has a thick fluid in it and in this cold weather it is ispecially thick. This makes the fan turn almost at engines speed and that makes the roaring noise. After it has been spinning a while, the fluid gets warm and gets thinner. that makes the fan turn slower than the engine. This is normal and needs no attention.

It could be tons of different things , but being that the problem is more evident during cold weather , I'm inclined to think that the serpentine belt is loose.

Check the oil first, if it is low it will cause a host of noises in the engine.
