Question about 2003 Mitsubishi Galant

1 Answer

Hello: I have a 2003 Galant with 92k miles on it. I asked a local STS auto center (Long Island) how much does it cost to replace the timing belt and I was told about $900, which would include a new water pump. I do not know if this was for both belts, (timing and balance) I didnt ask that, I simply asked for 'timing belt'. Is this price normal? Thanks

Personally that sounds expensive (but what isn't in NYC right?) I'd get a few other quotes from other service centers. Locally in midwest Chicago, Minneapolis they're getting about half that (I called a few places) Do you have a Pep Boys by you? You might try them...

When to change timing belt on 2003 mitsubishi galant

Most timing belt suppliers recommend 50k to 60k miles for replacement. Your Galant has a interference engine meaning that if the belt fails your will incur major engine damage up to and including replacement of the entire engine.

So if you have over 60k miles on the car go ahead and change the belt, and while you have it apart replace the water pump.

WHEN SHOULD I REPLACE THE TIMING BELT ON 2003 ELANTRA AND WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT TO PAY?

The timing belt should be replaced every 60,000 miles, this is very important because this engine is not free wheeling if the belt fails, this means the engines valves hit the pistons. The cost to replace the timing belt is about $300 but varies with local labor rates, the rate where I live is $100.00 per hour.

Does the 93 have. A timing belt or chain?

Ask your local auto parts store, they can look it up. It may depend on your specific engine, the 2003 Honda Accord used a chain on the 4 cylinder but a belt on the V6.
The belt should (usually) be replaced every 60000 miles (100000 km), while the chain should last the life of the engine (150000+ miles).
On many engines, if the belt breaks, it can cause expensive damage to the valves and/or pistons, so you want to make sure you replace it as scheduled.

Timing belt replacement for rubber belts is around 60, 000 miles, maximum is 90,000 miles, Since you have 84,000 miles, I would do it soon.

Water pump chang on mitsubishi Galant 2.5 V6

Waterpump replacement requires removal and replacement of your timing belt. Because of this it is not your typical do it yourself repair. Engine timing is critical, and not having your belt set correctly can lead to catastrophic engine damage.

You can purchase a service manual at your local parts store to get an idea of what is involved, however this being an interference engine you should leave this job to a professional if you are uncertain enough about your abilities that you need to ask for help on it. The cost to replace the waterpump is far far less than the cost to repair a engine that had an incorrectly set timing belt.

Your timing belt might have busted. Mine did that in November of 2007.... I had to replace 2 of the 4 cylinders, along with the timing belt and housing. Total cost was a little over $1700.00
