Question about 2001 Dodge Neon

1 Answer

100k+ miles. Replaced the idler pulley 'cuz it shredded the belt when it exploded into shrapnel. Because the procedure is involved, checked the timing belt and looked and felt ok and did not replace. Everything was reinstalled and the car started up, my daughter drove it to school. As she was on her way home the car just died. You insert the key, dash ok, lights work, I have this circular red light that stays on in upper right section of dash, MIL is on, cannot get codes from PCM, my reader just gives me 'ERR'. You turn the key to start, NOTHING, NADA, ZILCH. Checked battery, fine. Looked to see if by any chance the timing belt broke, nope (through upper inspection cover). All grounds are fine. Can't see or find any breaks in continuity in positive or negative side. (I'm scratching my head now). Is the PCM shot? Is there a way to check it? Any help other than informing me I should junk it will be much appreciated.

This is the anti theft shutting the car down. The key is the problem. Either the key has lost its signal to the computer or the security computer is causing this. If you have another key, then I would suggest trying this. The light on the dash indicates that the computer is not getting the proper signal from the key. You may have to take the VIN number to the dealership and get a new key made if you don't have a spare key. If the spare key does the same, then the security computer will have to be replaced. And programmed by the dealer. But hopefully the key is the problem.

Why belt keeps shredding

usually due to a bad bearing, or from resistance due to a frozen or failing assemble, as in power steering, alternator, or an idler. The best way to determine is to remove the belt and check all pulleys for play and resistance.

My serpintine belt on 2000 siloette keeps shredding

you most likely have a pulley out of alignment or bearing on one bad belt tensioners tend to lay at an angle when going bad this causes belt to try and ride on shoiulder of pulley and shreds belt with belt off check all pulleys and idlers for any play

I have a 1999 Mercury Sable. The only problem I have had with the car is the serpentine belt. It started 3 months ago . . . the engine was overheating and the belt was shredding. I bought a belt tensioner...

take the belt off and carefully check to see if any of the pulleys are out of line and check to make sure they spin smooth and true check for bearing wear and noise in any of the pulleys cause it sounds like simply there is a pulley out of line

I'd be more inclined to check that idler pulleys and alternator bearings are okay before looking at crank pulley. Take off the belt and give them a good wiggle and spin.

91 Jeep Cherokee Loredo/serpintine belt travels and shreds inside part of belt! Has new water pump and idle pulley(had a new belt!).

Possibly who ever replaced the water pump did not line up one of the pulleys or an idler correctly. If it is not spaced correctly the serpentine belt will not follow the grooves in the pulley. This will cause the belt to jump out of the grooves and jump track and rub on the pulley and shred it within a few minutes or seconds depending on how badly it is misaligned.Check the alignment on the pulleys and the routing path of the belt. Both must be correct in order to work properly.
