We may be able to assist you in a solution. Do you know what the trouble codes are turning the engine light on if not contact your mechanic? If so please post the numbers of the codes in here and engine size. We will certainly do our best in providing a solution to your issue. If your mechanic does not know the codes and there is an Autozone or Advanced Auto in your area typically they can read these codes for you at no charge.

i would check the thermostat first. even if your mechanic did replace it.the thermostats you buy these days only last about a year or 2.

Engine shaped light comes on, smell of burning inside car

The "engine light thing" or check engine light is a light that tells the driver through the vehicles computer that there in most cases is a sensor problem and yes in most cases it has to do with emissions. Your vehicles computer will store a code which helps lead the mechanic in the direction as to where the problem is. I'm not sure of your location but you can take it to your local auto parts store and the will plug your vehicle in to a computer to pull the code(s) to help narrow down where the problem is. I'm not there as to what you are smelling as far as what is burning but it could be wiring or a leak of some sort in the engine compartment that you may be smelling inside the vehicle. Lets just say it is a wire that is shorted or burning. The code that is pulled should lead the mechanic to the general area as to where the short is located. In any case gettting the diagnostic trouble codes pulled is a start to finding the source of the problem. At this point until I can get a code I can't help you much as to the direction to go but hope I was able to clear up what the engine light is telling you. If you get a code(s) feel free to comment or reply here or you can email me directly at csautomotivecars@att.net and I will be happy to help you understand what the code means and maybe what you can do about it but will need the make, model, year and engine size of your vehicle. Don't worry the help won't cost you anything and I may just be able to give you a description depending on what the code is. Hope I was able to help

My engine light in my 2002 GMC Sonoma has been on for the past four weeks. Yesterday I had an oil change done on my truck with a local mechanic. He turned the engine light off, but it came on soon after...

Your mechanic should know, he reset the light. Battery life can be as short as 24 months. You need to look at the age of the battery, if you bought a low price battery, it is a 24 month one. Check the cables on the battery and make sure they are clean and tight. You can get the OBD codes from any autoparts store, they read them free.

Check engine light has been on for 2 years...have

The EVAP System has a leak and needs to be repaired.
Obviously your mechanic, has not kept up with todays vehicles. EVAP issues are common. I would get a new mechanic, and make sure they have an EVAP Smoke Machine, otherwise their wasting their time and yours.
Also,if your the type of person who rides around 2 years with a check light on,you don't have much interest in what you drive.
I would guess you got at least one other drivabilty issue.
Pull the codes, and have your NEW Mechanic repair properly and SOON
